How about..

Try Restarting your computer and see if it will recognize it after that?

connection

Are you using a hub? Try either a direct connection or a different USB port if already connected directly.

Tiffany, try this first...

...as this is likely to be your problem if you have a new nuvi.

If the problem is with your c320 or nuvi 650, ignore this reply. If a newer device, it's time to update your account info.

Need more info

Can not give you any help simply because you have not provide anything relevant.

Is it a new Garmin (recent model)?
Is it a new computer (you have never use and Garmin with this computer before)?
Do you have Garmin USB Drivers installed on computer?

Conputer does not recognize Garmin: USB cable?

There are a couple of types of USB cable. Some only supply power (good for operating/recharging devices), and some supply both power and data transfer. Make sure you are using one with data transfer.

exactly what is it you are

exactly what is it you are attempting to do? I had the same problem with my new computer on a new device when I tried to send favorites to my unit and it would not recognize the unit, also sometimes when you try to update your unit, same result. if this is your issue, I think I have the solution. it requires pressing particular button and changing a setting. Let me know if this is your issue. If it is, here is the solution:

To put an MTP device into mass storage mode:
1.Touch Volume
2.Touch and hold the upper right corner of the screen
3.Touch MTP Settings (you may need to scroll down) ◦Touch Configuration and Settings on some devices before getting the option for MTP Settings

4.Touch Mass Storage Single Session
5.Touch Save

The device will now go into mass storage mode when connected. After the initial connection, it will go back to MTP mode when connected again

Need Input From tiffany

Makes no sense to speculate what the problem could be until tiffany returns to the forum and provides more information on which unit she is having the issue with. Wihout that we are just guessing and cluttering up the thread.

Not true. I've been using different USB cables (for my digital camera, cell phone etc). They work just fine.

Why do you say this?

@nansoutey

I agree with chewbacca that most any usb cable will work with my garmins.

What experience have you had in the past that gave you a problem?

Any data usb cable will work. What doesn't always work is when you try to plug the unit into usb 3.0 blue in color. Usb 2.0 white. Usb 3.0 connections are supposed to be usb 2.0 OR 3.0. I get grief sometimes.

This thread is getting as bad as when a new map release is announced. Just my observation.

I have had that problem!

I figured out that the USB port in my laptop was the issue and plugged it into another port and was fine.

Bad Port

I bought a new gps, I updated all maps and I had difficulty in doing that but in the end I was able to update. I went to the car and I could not find traffic and was connected the the traffic receiver. I called garmin and I did al the things he was explaining with no success. I took back that unit and bought another and now it is fine. The problem was on the charging port on the gps.
