I'm resetting my Nuvi to factory,

I'm resetting my Nuvi to factory, but the battery is failing. What happens if it runs out while doing the reset? The instructions say to not have it connected to power.

If it matters it's the one about the size of an iPhone.

Charge Your Battery First.

I would not suggest doing a reset with a weak battery. Either plug it into a wall charger, your PC, or your car to charge the battery before doing the reset. Also make sure to backup your favotites or you'll loose them.

I'm cofused, do you not know the model of your GPS?
Your profile shows a Nuvi 760.

I'm resetting my Nuvi to factory

I agree with muell9k, don't do it with a bad battery. I suggest you replace the battery. You can get one at amazon, ebay or a place like www.newpower99.com, you'll pay a little more, but they supply the tools and video instructions to perform the switch, with a warranty.

It's a 3760,

It's a 3760, and I've tried many times with the bottom right screen depressed, and it keeps loading the map and gives me the usual warning about using while driving message. And then boots like normal.

Two methods

DorkusNimrod has offered two methods for the nuvi 37xx series. Have you tried both?

nuvi 37xx series hard reset:

1. Power off the unit (press/hold the power button for ~7 seconds)
2. Power on the unit
3. When the Garmin copyright screen is displayed, press & hold the bottom-right corner of the screen
4. Release the screen when "Do you really want to erase all user data?" appears
5. Touch "Yes"

Alternate method:
1. With the unit powered on at the map screen, press the bottom-right "Speed" field which will take you to the Trip Computer page
2. Press/hold the area just above the numerical speed on the round speedometer dial (where the compass heading is displayed when moving)
3. After pressing this spot for ~7 seconds, you will enter diagnostics mode
4. Select the first option displayed "Clear all user data", then follow the prompts

Additional Advice

If your battery will no longer hold a decent charge I agree with member dlpickens to replace the battery.
A battery that doesn't hold a charge can cause problems when updating firmware, the Nuvi may crash if it doesn't have enough battery power to install the firmware update.

If after charging the unit and it holds a substantial charge try the methods member CraigW has outlined above.

Let us know how you made out.

OK!

I did get the erase all user data screen and my recents are gone, but my favs are still there. Does this sound right?

"3. When the Garmin copyright screen is displayed, press & hold the bottom-right corner of the screen
4. Release the screen when "Do you really want to erase all user data?" appears
5. Touch "Yes""

Nothing else worked, now time will tell if I'm now good to go!

Not Sure The Master Rest Worked

If you did everything correctly your favorites should have been removed. After a reboot it should have asked you what country you are in, did that happen?

It's possible you had an additional .gpx file that contained your favorites besides the current.gpx file in your GPX folder. If that was the case whenever you reboot the contents of that file will always be added to your current .gpx file and you will not be able to delete (favorites) using the delete function while viewing your favorites.

Check the GPX folder and advise how many files are in there and the size. On a reset there should only be a current.gpx file at about 1kb containg the 3 Garmin locations.

Do you

Do you have a .gpx file in the GPX folder on the Nuvi with a name other than Current.gpx? If so, the Nuvi is taking the contents of the other gpx file(s) and rebuilding your Favorites using that data. This is normal.

If you were to delete the .gpx file(s) and then do a reset, your Favorites would then be empty.

I always copy everything I

I always copy everything I can get off the garmin before a reset. I have even formatted the memory and copied data back and it works.

Yes, it did ask me what

Yes, it did ask me what country. Just give me a chance to see if it freezes on routes all the time. Thats what I'm after.

Btw, it now will draw a map of a route, where before it got just so far and quit.

It may, Garmin CS did walk

It may, Garmin CS did walk me though saving my favorites. I remember this because we both thought that I would loose the folders. But that time I pressed on the lower left instead or right. Don't know the difference though.

UPDATE:

It worked! I'm a happy camper. It will draw a map a lot faster without stopping and nothing freezes. And I think I did have an extra file on it because some of my Fav's were missing since the CS person walked me through that process.Eventually I want to know what he had me do so I can keep it up to date for the next time I have to reset my Garmin.

...

Congrats! Always good to see when something works.
