truck gps not routing down I95 through NY over G.W bridge

So here is the scenario: I'm up north picking up a load & say I'm delivering to NJ Port. The shortest way to go is down I95, through NYC & over the GW Bridge & down into NJ on 95. But the truckers GPS refuses to bring you this way & instead it will take you off of I95 onto I287 over the Tappan zee Bridge & down I287 to get there adding extra miles & time to your route. Or say you are in Long Island at the paper plant making delivery. Dispatch wants you to go to New Jersey Port to pick up a load next. They say you are only 15 miles away. You type in the address in your truck GPS & the truck GPS says you are a 160 miles away. The GPS is trying to route you back over the Tappan zee up and back down instead of routing you south on 440 & picking up I287. You could even be on Long Island and be dispatched over into New Jersey. You could take the 278 to get over into New Jersey but once again your GPS tries to route you, once again, back up and over the Tappan zee Bridge and back over adding lots of miles. So you make this mistake not realizing until it is too late & you just turned a 30 mile or less run into over a 100 plus mile run and your company is yelling at you over your Qualcomm about your out of route miles and charge back. So you make this mistake a few times & you start to realize what is going on so you start to ignore your truck GPS constantly trying to reroute you and turn you around and the closer you get the GW the more persistent it gets. It keeps on trying to reroute you to go back over and over again until eventually it gives up and tells you there is no legal route possible & cancels your route all together. So now you have to wait until you get through NYC & cross the GW Bridge to restart your GPS and continue your trip. So you get frustrated with your truckers GPS & start to think it is a flaw with the brand that you bought & consider purchasing another brand. So you buy a different brand and discover that the issue still exists and that it wasn't the GPS or the manufacturer. So what really is the problem? The problem has to do with the way that NYC legalized their roads and has nothing to do with the GW Bridge at all. In order to fix this issue there are two things that you have to do & they are in your truck GPS settings. Number 1 change the length of your trailer to 48 feet. Number 2 change your height to 12 feet 2 inches. This will solve that problem. just remember to change the settings back.

update to routing issue.

so I picked up a load out of Alabama and I brought it to Westfield, Ma. I expected my GPS to bring me up I81 through Virginia and it did. then I figured I would take I-78 over into new jersey and I did. it was sat and my load did not deliver until Mon so I decided to take a 34 hour reset in Connecticut at the pilot I-95 exit 40. so I added this as a via. I knew the GPS would bring me from I-78 to I-287 over the tapa zee to I-95 and that it would not bring me to the G.W. bridge through NYC but it did and surprised the crap out of me. it latterly routed me through new jersey on I-95 over the G.W. up I-95 through NYC to the truck stop without one single hiccup. so I checked my settings because from previous conversations with Randmcnally tech I learned that I had to change settings to make this possible. truck height 13'6" with 8'9" And length 48 feet. well that's usually set to 53' so I guess to fix the problem you only need to change the trailer to 48' and you don't have to change the height to 12'6". does anyone else run this rout and has this problem. please if you do try doing this and tell me if it helped and how it helped.

Figures

Give Gov. Chris Christie a call.

I-95 and the George Washington Bridge

The size restrictions for I-95 and the GW Bridge through New York City are posted here:

http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/motorist/sizewt.shtml

Height 13'6"

Width 8'6"

Trailer Length 53'

Do not leave the interstate for local streets with a trailer this size.

See also the bridge website:

Southbound I-95 to the GW Bridge (the Cross-Bronx Expressway) is considered the "Twilight Zone" for traffic jams by locals. I have not driven that route in 40 years. To make things worse there is long-term construction 2 miles east of the bridge.

To avoid New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, take the Tappan Zee Bridge - both sides are in New York!

It's got to be 20 years since I've driven the Cross Bronx except by accident. I usually take the Triboro to Manhattan, then the Harlem River Drive to the GWB.
