Waypoint vs POI - I don't want to navigate to my POI

Newbie here,...
I have the Nuvi 1490 with snowmobile maps loaded on SD card,..all works well.
In MapSource I created a waypoint of our cottage that we sled out of...
As soon as I go to the map on the nuvi it wants to navigate me to the waypoint.
I dont want this to happen, I just want it to be a POI like other POI's on the map...

What am I doing wrong here,...
I have tried loading the location via gpx (gpx folder) and csv (POI folder)

I am technical so creating the gpx (XML) file or the csv file is not he issue....

Not sure why it wants to navigate to the waypoint....is it a value in the files or is it the type of file..

Thanks for any help
Darren

Semantics

POI = Point of Interest
Waypooint = Point of Interest... typically used as a stop on route between two end points.

Does it really matter as long as you can recall it, select it - and get directions to where you want to go?

Welcome to the site.

Before getting too deeply into a problem posted by someone new to the site (in your case a "navigation" problem), we usually recommend the following.

There is a "Learn" button in the upper right of this page next to "red light cameras" that takes you to a Getting Started page. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

So, using the "Learn" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Tutorials.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup). It also assures that you put your (newer) unit into a state where you can see all of the folders there.

Now, to the "navigation" problem.

On those times when I turned on one of my devices and it immediately wanted to "route" me to some point, it was because I had not "stopped" a previous route. If you are seeing (either on the main menu or on the Map screen) a red "stop sign" with an "X" in its middle, then press that.

Both my 765 and my 2595 will "remember" that I was on a "route" if I shut the device down without first "stopping" the active route.

I am doing this for my

I am doing this for my father and the concern is that everytime he turns the nuvi on it will try and navigate him back to the cottage when he is snowmobiling,...this is not what I want...

The maps have POI`s built in that when you are close by they pop up, but don`t try to navigate you to it...

That is what I am loking for.....

I dont really want a `stop` point per se, just a point that I may or may not want to stop at...

Thanks for any insight...

Yes, I have read numerous posts and yet to figure this out.

The nuvi asks me to `Go` when it turns on so I don`t believe it is in a `route`

Thanks for all the `how-to`s` but I am way beyond that....I am a programmer and can find my way around forums fairly well.

I do appreciate the suggestions though John.

Cheers

What do you see on the "Map"

When you turn the unit on and immediately press the "Map" Icon, is there a "stop sign" on the right side of the "Map" screen?

look for the X

First of all, I don't use a 1490 so my experiences may not relate directly to yours.

But on my Nuvi 250, if I have told it to "go to" some location (mine does not support routes), and I power it off and later power it on again, it will still want to go to that location and continue to give me directions to there unless I reach the destination or cancel the "go to". On mine there is a big red X on the page that you get to right before displaying the map that is used to cancel the current destination without putting in a new destination. Check if your problem is as simple as the receiver thinking that you want to go to that destination and still trying to get you there.

Favorites vs Custom POIs vs built-in POIs

Darren, if you created a waypoint in Mapsource and sent it to your nuvi, it's going to be a Favorite and as such, will have some differences compared to built-in POIs (part of many Garmin maps) or Custom POIs (loaded with Garmin's POI Loader software).

But even as a Favorite, it should not be auto-offered as a destination when turning on the nuvi unless there was a pending route to it that was never completed or never cancelled when the nuvi was last on.

What happens if you turn the nuvi on, get offered a route to the cottage, you accept the route, then go to the main menu and tap the red Stop Sign icon? If there had been a pending route, this should cancel it.

The only other thing I can think of is that you transferred a Route to the nuvi rather than a Favorite using Mapsource. You could check the nuvi for Saved Routes and remove any you find there.

One last thought: you say you're using a SD-installed snowmobile map. Is this a custom map that's being used rather than City Navigator North America NT? Is it a routable map? If it's not a routeable map, any route to a destination will be as-the-raven-flies rather than following trails and such. I'm just curious here about this map. For me in my local national forest, I have the option of routing to destinations along roadways using City Navigator--or using the Forest's Motor Vehicle Use Map which indicates open and closed roadways but will not give me turn by turn directions to a destination.

Update: I see my mention of red stop signs has already been mentioned twice as I typed my reply cool

You're on the ball,...you

You're on the ball,...you get what I am doing...

I thought it was weird it was auto-offered as well, hence my post.

There is no route loaded as stop sign does not show up to stop the route...

Re: custom maps...
Map was issued by the snowmobile federation and has routable capability.

Using Mapsource I included City Nav maps that are underlaying the sled trails, that way when the Nuvi City Nav layer is turned off they still show up for the sled trails...I didnt want all the streets so I embedded just the underlaying roads.

So how do I differentiate from a Waypoint in MapSource and a true POI that I don't want as part of a route?

what you need to do

You do have the Nuvi navigating to the cabin. What you need to do is fire up the unit, when it displays the go screen, press GO then press menu. The stop sign appears on the home screen. This should clear the unit.

This shouldn't be needed since you and all responders here feel that what you're seeing is not to be expected. To reinforce Boxcar's comment if needed, the red stop sign on the main menu only appears when a route is active, so you need to be sure to accept the auto-suggestion and press Go to see the stop sign (in red rather than grey) to be able to tap and cancel the active route to the cottage. It's also very useful to go to your nuvi's page listing saved routes and see if there are any routes listed there, especially if one is stated to be Active. If no saved routes are expected, delete them all. It may also be worth experimenting with the removal of your cottage Favorite in the nuvi that was loaded with Mapsource, then see if the auto-suggestion is gone.

But you ask how to differentiate the various points. If indeed your auto-suggested route on startup continues to be an issue, my suggestion is to delete the Favorite (your cottage loaded with Mapsource to the nuvi) and instead create a single-location Custom POI in csv or gpx format, then load this to your nuvi with Garmin's POI Loader software. (To find this loaded Custom POI, you will tap Whereto/Extras/CustomPOIs/then tap the POI filename you chose for your Custom POI, and tap Go to go there.) As a Custom POI, there should be no issue of auto-suggesting--but then, we all feel that it also shouldn't be there for Favorites either. Another advantage of the Custom POI route is that you can select a Custom Icon for the cottage and have it appear on the nuvi in place of a generic dot or flag.

The only other possibility here (I don't know how this would occur, but your having two active maps is not common) is that your problem arises because you have both City Nav and the snowmobile map active at the same time. It would be a worthwhile experiment to see what happens if only one map is active (do as 2 experiments, once with City Nav only and once with snowmobile only) and see if your auto-suggestion persists.

And since we're all as confused as you now, keep posting with your results and if you succeed, let us know what worked.

One final thought: have you seen if the auto-suggestion continues after doing a hard reset? This may be worth a try:

Just in case

Just in case others have the same thought, the 1490 does not offer myTrends, so there's no possibility that that auto-suggestion is myTrends suggesting a predicted/guessed destination:

The waypoint and poi was created through Mapsource and I have added it to the device via the POI Loader as suggested...it was not created via the device.

I have tried it via the GPX file/format and via the POI folder with the csv file....same result.

I know the files are correct as I have written XML and csv files before and used a few from this site as templates...
99.9% sure the code is fine..

My wife is out with the nuvi in the car now but will try removing a couple of the map layers and see what happens.
