What files are absolutely needed, which can be deleted?

I have a Nuvi 270, and keep a 4gb sd card in it, mainly for the Europe map (which got large) and and pics I carry.
Now the main onboard memory is exceeded by the North America map updates. What I find weird is that the updater didn't say there was insufficient memory for the entire map, yet I get an Out of Memory screen upon boot up. Windows says I have over 900 mb of empty space on the device. So I'd like to find out what files, besides voices and text etc can be removed, which must be there. Also, what amount of free space must be maintained for the map (and routes, as it seems that sometimes I could view the map but a route of any length caused errors).
From here on out I know to not take the entire map, and to probably exclude Mexico and Canada.

Some Things to Delete

Get rid of all voices that you don't use. If you speak English, you won't need Russian, Ukranian, Finish, etc. These unused voices can take up a fair amount of memory.

Get rid of unnecessary vehicles. Again, eep the ones you're likely to use, but the others take up memory.

There's very little that can

@OP: There's very little that can be deleted off a 270 besides voices and text. Removing voices is where you get your largest space savings since the voices are relatively large compared to the car icon. In any event your 270 should be like my 200W in that, with a firmware update, you should be able to have two maps named gmapsupp.img and gmapsup1.img respectively on the SD card. With an 8GB SD card you could easily store both North America and Europe on the card with room to spare.

thanks

I wasn't sure if the nuvi created files each time it was updated that could later be removed, sounds like not. I've already removed any extra voices and vehicles and all pics are already on the SD card.

If you run WebUpdater you'll

If you run WebUpdater you'll be prompted to download the missing voices, keyboard files, and vehicles. However, it's totally optional. On updates I'll routinely not check a single thing on those options and I'll be good to go.
