In dash GPS

Does anyone have knowledge of uploading POIs into Mercedes, Audi, or Ford in dash GPS systems?

KeepRollin

not possible

Most in dash systems do not allow users to add anything other than manually entered locations they then store as favorites.

430N allows it

I realize you said "most". The 430N (a Garmin product) in my 2013 Jeep allows me to add POI's. However, it's an all or nothing kind of deal, anytime I add new POI's it erases all the old ones so I have to include every POI I want each time I load new ones.

I have the same problem

I have a 2014 Acura MDX with Nav. In order to upload POIs via USB, you have to insert a row at the top of the data in the X-Cel spread sheet and add an "x", "y" and "name" without the quotes to the first 3 columns. I tried to do that with redlight cameras. The upload was successful but it didn't do me any good because I cannot add an alert function.

The in dash GPS provides convenience but with limited functionality.

Same here

I have this one also (430N) and regularly load updated school zones, rest areas and red light cameras in mine. Works great. Now if I could only get it to read and send texts thru voice on the iPhone, I would be a happy camper.

Uploading POI's

I yanked the navigation unit out of my Mercedes and replaced it with a Kenwood DNX6990hd now uploading POI's is easy.

Bypass The In Car

I use my own GPS any car, anyplace, add and delete POI as I wish.

Me Too

I has the same experience with my Acura MDX.

Thanks for confirmiing.

Another reason why I don't get the in dash GPS. Still love my garmin.

A reason ...

As I previously mentioned my Jeep has an in dash GPS that does accept custom POI's via USB, looks like I lucked out there.

My last vehicle did not have the in dash GPS. I always had the GPS in a bag in the car but didn't always set it up on trips I knew the route or for my everyday driving trips. The in dash is great when running into unexpected detours or traffic jams, a couple of button pushes and I can see my way around the problem. With my portable I'd basically have to stop and set it up to do that. I didn't leave it set up all the time because I didn't want someone to smash my window to steal it. So, there is at least one good thing about having an in dash GPS system

Good to know

I'm looking at a new Dodge in the not-to-distant future, and have been checking out their in-dash nav system. It's good to know you can add custom POIs to it - and when I update my Nuvi, the Garmin POI-Loader replaces the full set of POIs, so I'm used to operating that way.

Inquire with the dealer if the new Dodge you want to buy falls into the category of "smart car technology".

Interesting article discussing the capabilities you may not like.

When I bought my 2013 Jeep they offered two different Nav systems. Garmin does not make both. I opted for the Garmin system because I know the basics of how Garmin works and it was the least expensive of the two.

Interesting, alarming, but not surprising article. Most smartphones have GPS, tablets, laptops etc. just about every move we make in some cities is on camera, there's no end to 'our' being watched, welcome to the future.

Is there a current list of cars that have this technology? I just bought a new car and I despise this idea. They'll market it as if it will prevent accidents but not disclose the privacy issues that go along with it.

Don't really don't care how it will be marketed to the G.P. How about:

http://www.ford.com/technology/sync/
http://www.toyota.com/entune/

So lets consider the possibilities. Lets say there is a disclaimer that you enact by simply turning your in dash radio on ... which will legally constitute consent. Or perhaps something is written in the sales contract which you sign. Now who will have access to that tracking information? I supposed all it would take would be some politician's ex-wife's divorce lawyer to sue the car company for that tracking information. Wanna bet Congress will pass a law post haste requiring a secret recording kill switch, thus exempting members from having their vehicles tracked.

The interesting timeliness of this issue for me is that I have been considering purchasing a mechanically tricked out 4Runner for some serious off roading in the 4 Corners area. I consider Toyota's enTune OEM system a major negative, expressly over this very issue. mad
I will likely vote w/my wallet & go out in my current Nissan vehicle instead!

Yup, Blackberry and others are fighting

They have most Manufactures covered, but its a battle over who will offer the most features. Smart phones will be big brothers best friend!

What were the steps you took to add the POIs? What format did you use?

Thanks in Advance.

In my settings on my Honda there is a place to set alarms. Did you check your settings?

In Dash GPS

I have an in dash GPS but I almost never use the thing. I much prefer my old nüvi 760. I've never updated the maps as they want around $200 for the update. Crazy.

GPSMAP 76CSx - nüvi 760 - nüvi 200 - GPSMAP 78S

That's not bad...

Really no different than buying a new Garmin every three years. Just updated my Lexus builtin for $99 in October. The built ins do so much more than the portables and can't get lost or stolen. Still like my Garmin also. For different reasons.

Use the address book.

My Prius can only hold 5 destinations but also has an address book to which I use as destination POI.

I use the Phone Contacts

My HD will read the contacts from my phone and let me go to a contact on the phone.

Have a high end 2011 Ford

Have a high end 2011 Ford Escape.

No external POI's.

No Gravel Road exclusion (And that Bit me in the butt big time in Missouri & Arkansas!).

and Updates cost hundreds of dollars with no lifetime option.

Back when we only had a Nuvi 660, The Nuvi out calculated and gave better routes than the Ford did...

Now that we have a newer unit (2489 I think)... the Ford GPS is even less used than before...

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!
