Garmin 3597 Interface Mode ???

I'm sure this has been asked millions of times but I'm new to POI-Factory and GPS units. I apologize.

When I connected the USB cable to my brand new 3597 I did see:

you will probably see, as I can with mine, a graphic of a GPS connected by cable to a PC

But now the unit either starts up with a black screen ot the main menu (Where to? View Map).

How do I get to the place where my GARMIN POI Loader (or my laptop) will recognize the attached GPS unit?

Thanks,

MODERATOR NOTE:
Here's what to do if POI Loader doesn't find your 3597
- on the GPS main menu screen, touch volume
- on the volume screen, touch and hold the upper right corner
- touch "MTP settings"
- touch "mass storage single session"
- touch "save"

Welcome to the factory

More than likely, what you want to do is change your GPS from MTP mode to MS mode:

See the section called "Can't see a .system folder:"

HELP..............!!!!!

First let me say I have been a mainframe Sysprog for many years. And I still hate these small computers.

Following your email.

I did get the 3597 changed over to MASS Storage.

And via Windows explorer I did uncheck the two boxes relating to system and hidden files.

But the Garmin will not start up with a graphic of a GPS connected by cable to a PC.

Thanks very much for your help in this 'simple' endeavor.

Have you tried different USB ports and/or cables.

Describe what happens when you attach a USB cable to your device and to your computer?

The Garmin immediately

change cables

Change the USB cable. The unit will go into charge mode if the cable is wired so voltage is sensed on certain pins. Cables aren't normally built this way, but if it is a cable built for another device, it may have the internal connections Garmin uses to sense either a transfer or charging cable.

It is the USB cable that

It is the USB cable that Garmin provides. It is so damn short and its plug is smaller than a mini usb male on the Garmin end.

How can I disconnect the plastic Garmin piece that attaches to the back of the 5" unit. It is really stuck on, magnetic force.

As I recall I got the

a graphic of a GPS connected by cable to a PC.

before this piece was attached to the 5" unit.

Thx.

Good news. I separated the

Good news.

I separated the magnetic mount from the display and then plugged the garmin USB cable into the back of the display and guess what appeared on the screen?

a graphic of a GPS connected by cable to a PC.

AND
the garmin device appeared on my Windows Explorer.........!!!!!!

I have downloaded some POIs to my C drive. Now to try to upload to the garmin.

Three Cheers. Thanks for all

Three Cheers.

Thanks for all the help.

Using POI-Factory I downloaded Camping World to my C drive, then used the garmin POI loader to upload to 3597. The loader nicely indicated success (including the #POIs uploaded) and I was able to display and ROUTE to the first entry on the 3597.

When I used the loader I gave the group of POIs the name 'Camping World NEE' but when I pressed 'custom POIs' on the 3597 it returned a list of the camping world POIs rather than the group name 'camping world'.

How can I get the group name to be listed (thus excluding all the other POIs not of interest) rather than all the individual POIs or will this happen as soon as I upload my second POI group name?

Thanks,

Once you have two files loaded with Poi Loader they will be listed by file name. If you want categories see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 .

I am planning a cross

I am planning a cross country trip, litterally from WA to LA to SC coast (during winter).

I successfully created 80K POIs on my laptop, each POI type in a different Win7 sub folder and then successfully uploaded to the 3597.

The unwritten key to this process was that I needed to seperate the display from the magnetic holding device before attempting the POI upload.

Garmin 3597 Map Layers

Don't custom POIs have to be selected as a MAP LAYER in order to have it automatically display on the VIEW MAP screen?

Do I again have to disconnect the display from the magnetic mount?

On my 3597, after adding 80K custom POIs in about 10-12 different groupings, how do I get these groupings to show as options on the MAP LAYERS screen? The only options not listed are the Garmin pre-loaded ones, and I see not option for 'adding a layer'.

(1) A previous post (see below) says 'add and remove the desired map layers'. How???:

(2) It also mentions adding MAP LAYERS BUTTON to the view map screen. How..??

Thx.

To access map layers from the View Map screen on the nuvi 2405, 2505, 3400, 3500, dezl 760, or zumo 350.

Touch View Map.
Touch the menu button (three horizontal lines).
Scroll down.
Touch Map Layers.
Add and remove the desired map layers.
Touch Save.
The Map Layers menu can also be added as a map button on the View Map screen on the nuvi 2405, 2505, 3400, 3500, dezl 760, and zumo 350.

Unfortunately these three

Unfortunately these three posts don't cover my questions, tho they were informative.

It appears the custom POIs are active on my map even tho I have not activated. But I would like to assign a larger more visible location marker than the default very small blue dot. How do I do this?

And I do not know how to create a MAP LAYERS button on the three bar icon. Or do I need to?

Sorry for all the questions. Would be nice if all were documented somewhere.

Really I need to do complex/advanced GOOGLE SEARCHes including 'site:xxxxx' but I do not know what site to be searching. Suggestions?

Thanks,

Email this Answer Print this Answer

09/05/2013 Select Garmin devices allow you to customize the map buttons that appear along the side of the map screen for easy access to certain features, settings, and menus.

Customizable map buttons are available only on the following devices:

nuvi 2405 series nuvi 2505 series nuvi 3400 series nuvi 3500 series zumo 350 zumo 390 dezl 760

The standard map buttons on all compatible devices are as follows:

Traffic Mute Stop Phone (Bluetooth models only) Detour Exit Services Where Am I? Trip Computer Map Layers Brightness Where To? Skip (zumo 390 only) ecoRoute (nuvi models only) Audible (nuvi and dezl models only) Compass (zumo models only) Fuel Settings (zumo models only) Truck Map (dezl models only) Trucking Search (dezl models only)

The Stop and Detour buttons are only available when you're in an active route.

The Exit Services button will only display while you're in an active route on a major highway or Interstate.

If the Traffic map button is disabled, you may still access the traffic page from the map menu button (three horizontal lines).

The Skip feature on the zumo 390 will allow you to skip your next waypoint without first navigating there.

Devices that are connected to a compatible Smartphone via Bluetooth will also have the following map button options:

Weather Radar Traffic Cameras Tracker

Please note that Weather Radar and Traffic Cameras require you to have an active subscription to the Advanced Weather and photoLive subscriptions through Smartphone Link.

Custom Icons

Thanks,

See if this answers your question:

Yesterday I had little blue

Yesterday I had little blue dots on my map displaying Custom POIs. Today they do not appear.

How do I get them activated? Today I + down to 50 feet and none appear. Do I need to go into 'where to?' rather than 'view map'?

This morning I copied '18 wheeler' .bmp icon into my Costco subfolder and
renamed it to match the 'name of gpx' file but with .bmp extension. I did
not rename it to match the name of the subfolder.

Now I want to see if the 18 Wheeler icon is displayed for our local
Costco.

Any ideas?
Thanks,

From Garmin Support. Most

From Garmin Support.
Most automotive devices will only display icons on the map for your saved Favorites or custom Points of Interest (POI) files that you may have installed. To view the custom POI icons, you will need to zoom in the map to 200 feet or closer. The preloaded points of interest (restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc.) will not display icons on the map if they are not also saved favorites.

The device will show the POI icons on the map when it has started moving or is in an active route.

POI icons will NOT display on the map if your map view is set to either North Up or Track Up.

The zumo 350, zumo 390, dezl 760, RV 760, Camper 760, and nuvi 2405, 2407, 2408, 2505, 2507, 2508, 2707, 2708, 3400, 3500, 3507, and 3508 series devices will only display POI icons when you have that map layer selected.

Thanks,

what would you be searching for? and where would you be searching?

If you were searching for information that might be contained somewhere inside POI Factory, you would start your Google search with "site:poi-factory.com...."
