Remove?

On an older Garmin can you remove the older map files in the GPS if the newer map is installed on a SD card.

Yes.

It is OK to remove the old gmapprom.* files from the unit memory if you have the new map installed and working on SD. This assumes you installed the entire new map on SD and did not split it with some regions in internal memory and some on SD. If you split the map, you will need to be more careful about what can and can't be deleted.

NEVER remove the base map file gmapbmap.img.

Garmin Drive Smart 61 NA LMT-S

Use the Mass Storage Device Function

Attach your GPS to your computer using the USB cable and access it like a disk drive. You can navigate through the folders on the GPS and delete the old map files on the internal storage.

Thanks for the info, will do

After backing up the gmapprom.img file on the Nuvi 855LMT, then deleting it from the unit, you should see a faster boot up time.

If it aint broken

If it aint broke I wouldn't try to fix it. With a new sd card why worry about space? and how much boot up time can you gain by deleting on these units and especially on an older one?
