Formatting a Garmin Nuvi

Does anyone know how to completely reformat or wipe memory clean for a Garmin GPS? I have an older Garmin Nuvi 1350LMT. I have cleared all of my user data in the device settings and even tried to reset the device by doing the factory reset at boot up and nada!

I have POIs that were saved 3 years ago that I want to clear out. Even after deleting by the above methods, once I connect the device to a pc and use Basecamp or MapSource, the old favorites keep showing up! On export to the device the favorites then appear again on the device... It is very frustrating.

Or if anyone knows the file I can delete from the software to expunge those favorites, that would help as well.

Thanks in advance!!!

.

Connect the nuvi to the PC via the USB cable, then navigate to the POI folder. Clear out any files in that folder.

Also clear out all *.gpx files in the GPX folder as well. Note that "current.gpx" is impossible to keep off of the device as it's automatically generated, then populated/updated with the favorites currently on your nuvi. If favorites in the file do not exist on your GPS, they will be added by reading from this file, then transferred to the nuvi.

You can then delete (from the unit itself) all favorites. This need to be done on the unit itself because the favorites are stored in a memory area that is not accessible via the PC.

Do a master reset

After you follow DorkusNimrod's instructions about deleting any and all *.gpx files, then do a Master Reset.
How Do I Perform A Master Reset On My dezl/Edge Live/Nuvi/Quest StreetPilot/Zumo

Re:Formatting a Garmin Nuvi

Greetings

After you do the factory reset, and before you connect the device to your PC, are the POIs gone from the device ?

One of the features of using Basecamp, is to save the information from a device, so you can reload in the event of a data loss.

It sounds like that is what you are doing.

I was just about to say that.

Interesting Discovery

I would not recommend you formatting your Nuvi, problems could arise even though you backed up all your files. In addition no need to Defragment the Nuvi, it Defrags itself.

I'm confident DorkusNimrod's instructions will clear up your issue with Favorites reappearing, If not there may be other possibilities that may be causing the issue.

I'm not certain this applies to your Nuvi 1350LMT, but it does on my 2460LMT.

I've discovered that on the 2460, I can have a .gpx file in any folder or even in the root directory and it will add the contents to the current.gpx file. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO RESIDE IN THE GPX FOLDER.
This also holds true for an SD card.

As an experiment I created a folder on the SD card with the name of Test. I then copied the file temp.gpx into that folder. I booted the Nuvi without the SD card inserted and deleted ALL my favorites.
Next I rebooted the Nuvi with the SD card inserted and sure enough my favorites reappeared.
I also tested this my using the same method only this time I placed the temp.gpx file in the root directory of the Nuvi, NOT the "GPX" folder, once again the favorites appeared.

If using Windows, I suggest you do a search on the 1350 and the SD card (if using one) with the keyword .gpx. Then you can delete them so they won't be added each time you boot.

I am curious to know if this adding of .gpx files by placing anywhere is specific to the 2460 or will it apply to even newer units. Anyone who cares to try it please post your findings indicating what model this was tested on.

I appreciate you testing and confirming all your units mentioned behave this way. I learn something new each day for the old fart that I am.
I always believed the the .GPX files had to reside in the GPX folder to be recognized.
