Windows 8 and Mapsource ver 7/2013

Hi Everyone
I am again struggling with Mapsource. My old computer is dying and I have made the transition to a new Toshiba that came with Windows 8 whether or not I wanted it. I do not like windows 8 simply because of the learning curve. I do not want to start yet another one.
I can not get Mapsource to install. I am using the original CD with the unlock codes. It installs and then gives me a registry error message telling me to reinstall and restart. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Bill

What Version?

I did find this:

Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 require at least MapSource V6.12.2

As a last resort (if you can't get an updated version of MapSource and you still have the installation CD from your last computer) is you can install VirtualBox (free download @ virtualbox.org). You than then install the old OS (XP I assume) as a virtual machine in your new computer and run MapSource from it.

Windows Activation

Unless his XP disc is a VLK version the OS will fail to activate on the virtual machine.

If he cannot install MapSource, and with Windows 8 that is a distinct possibility, his only other option is to install BaseCamp.

Tutorials

Lots of Tutorials are available on Win8 and virtualbox.

Read this

That

That should get a copy of Mapsource onto the new Windows 8 machine but not much use until there are maps on that PC to use with Mapsource. That can happen when the OP next updates the maps on his LM GPS or if the .gmap file is copied from his old computer to the new one.

install ms

Download mapsource.exe from garmin or here http://www.gawisp.com/perry/mapsource/

extract with winrar or similar then double click main.msi or similar

Simple copying may work, but both MapSource and BaseCamp rely on registry entries to actually find the maps. I have some older maps where I have to create registry entries before they are seen by either program.

windows 8 is easy

if you get a program called "startisback" its only about 4 bucks you can have windows 8 go straight to the desktop and avoid metro, you cant tell the difference between it and win 7 except its a little faster, most programs are coming around now to run on win 8

This is off topic, but you can do the same thing for free with Classic Shell.

Thanks, good to know.

Windows 8

I feel the same way about Windows 8. I just got a new HP Pro Book. It came loaded with Windows 7 but it is licensed for and came with the disc for Windows 8. 8 is like a tablet, and I don' need another one of those.

Windows 8.1

Before I do the drastic thing and load Windows 7 on this, I am going to try the upgrade to Windows 8(.1). Its supposed to be out tomorrow (the 17th). I do the android thing (both phone and tablet, but feel that creating content and intensive typing work best for me on a conventional keyboard and operating system. I spent years learning them and I am comfortable using them. Android is VERY fluid and I am tired of relearning everything, with every upgrade that gets shoved down the pipe.

If you don't like Windows 8,

If you don't like Windows 8, you're not going to like Windows 8.1.

I think i had succes to load

I think i had succes to load mapsource in my W8 laptop, i had to download trainingcenter first and then i could download mapsource latest version.
Another thing i did with my windows8 was to download classic start, i tried and tried to understand w8 but in the end i gave up. classic start makes it a little easier. smile
8,1 anyday now, i wonder if i should go for it or wait a couple of weeks to see how it works for others...
