Recalculating Gone?

I recently bought a 2555 LM. After a week of driving, I noticed that it was no longer announcing "recalculating" when I didn't follow the proposed route.

Did Garmin drop the annoying RECALCULATING?

I used a voice editor and change "Recalculating" to "OK, lets try it your way"

To satisfy everyone, Garmin should make the "recalculating" feature user-configurable. Too many companies are fixing features to one extreme (Apple is notorious for this as well as Garmin). Whatever happened to what the individual user wants? I personally like the "recalculating" feature...but at the same time, I'd rather have it just play a BONG sound...something to alert me and get my attention. Nuvi's (3xx/6xx) used to play a BONG sound just before an upcoming maneuver/turn. It got your attention and alerted you discretely that something was coming up. And it was configurable by the user (play BONG: on/off). IMO, Garmin dumbs these things down way too much... rolleyes

Glad it's gone. Especially when it would repeat the phrase multiple times in a row.

Excellent...

But I am not sure my wife would find it so....

is it possible to program audio alert in new models at all?

Yes, none of the newer models say the word "recalculating".

The word is still in the Voice files, but the newer units no longer say it.

I also miss it, but that is because I used the TTSVoiceEditor
to change the phrase to "I am sorry, I will try it your way"

Do you know if it is possible to program some audio alert (say, similar to yours) in newer models at all?

thought I was the only one

Apparently not. Sort of the same thing as asking a [some] store employee to actually do their job ....

Least Favorite...

This is one of the least favorite "features" of my built-in GPS. It NEVER tells you when it's recalculating. I'm glad my old 760 still tells me although, once in a while, Jack seems to lose his mind and recalculate when it's not needed. Maybe this is a "feature" of the latest maps since this didn't use to happen.

I've found it to be a map problem. As the map is built from segments sometimes the alignment is off slightly and when this happens you get a "Recalculating" even though the magenta line shows the route continuing straight through.

The recalculating feature has nothing to do in what map version you are using, it's contained in the firmware of the Nuvi model. Older Nuvi models no longer get updated firmware so you would continue to receive recalculating on the older models.

Recalculating

Never really bothered me!

Liked the Recalculating

changed mine to say "Excuse me ! And just where in the hell do you think you are going?" and every one riding with ne greatley enjoyed it.

Garmin should make it a tog-able option.

I would like the option of having it "ding" or at least some type of "off course" sound. Like a previous comment, I would like to know as soon as possible I made an error, since I don't actually look at the unit very often while driving. I tend to rely on the sound indicators to glance at the unit to see "what's up".

shorter words, perhaps

KenSny wrote:

I'm not aware that non-speech sounds are available, but using the text-to-speech editor mentioned above I think you could get something shorter than "Recalculating". Some possibilities to consider:

1. Ding (the word, not the sound)
2. Uh-oh
3. Oh
4. Oops
5. Humm (not sure how it would pronounce that)
6. Um
7. One moment
8. Now
9. Maybe

It was a useful attention getter. I believe the "recalculating" announcement feature should be offered as an option that can be set on or off by the user. That would please all Garmin nuvi owners. Wouldn't it be great if Garmin added that to their next firmware update.

But.....

What I meant was that there is no sound when recalculating on the Nuvi 50LM which is what I have in the daily driver, so without looking at the unit you don't know that you went "off exploring again".

And neither the TTSvoiceeditor or NonTTSvoiceeditor mentioned above recognize the 50's VPM files.

Funny

My wife and step-daughter often ask "are we exploring the side roads again?". Who needs a GPS when there are so many roads to see and so little time to see them.

Option ...

To be honest, it never bothered me but I wish they would have programmed an option to turn it off or change it on the unit itself.

I put up with it

I would rather have it than not since I could miss the recalculation and drive many miles of my planned route.

I'm glad it's gone. It gets rather annoying when it repeats the same message repeatedly. I'd rather it quietly recalculate and just say the new directions.

Irony

Just as we're discussing how to get the Recalculating on newer units, my old 770 just lost all sounds (beeps, directions, AND recalculating) completely. So now, I'm really driving in silence...

Did you mute it?

No, but I wish it was that simple. Not muted, not FM enabled, volumes up, nothing helps. Even the beeps when I enter the PIN are silent. Going to factory reset to see if it helps

While I don't miss it, I do

While I don't miss it, I do wish it were an available option to select or deselect.

Agreed

I too found the word "Recalculating" irritating Instead of deleting it, I would appreciate an audible alert such as a ding. Often when alerted to a missed turn, I find it quicker to retrace my route to the missed turn then following the silently recalculated route. My 2460 might plot a route to correct an error and not alert me to the next turn until I approach a close proximity to it. I have found my self adding several miles to a route when a short redo would be much better.

That's how I feel as well. "Recalculating" is annoying when you knew you want to go a different way, especially when it keeps going off every block or or exit or so. But if you don't know you've gotten off course, not hearing "Recalculating" can get you into trouble and lengthen your trip. As someone else said, you have to learn to check the screen on new Garmins periodically for the visual clue that it's calculating a new route (it says so, usually top center).

Gone from the 3590....and good riddens

I liked my 3590 when I first got it, and now that it doesnt have "recalculating", I LOVE it!! I have hated that from day one when I bought my first C-340!!!! I know, I could change it to say something else, and I did, but, today, when I deviated from my first turn, I cringed, thinking it was going to say "recalculating", and that I would have to edit that line to say something else. Now, I do not have to change anythint! BTW, I do not normally use this many exclamations, but I am stoked (happy) at having to NOT hear the dreaded "recalculating", and I do not have to edit it!!!!! It is perfect, just like it is. Just used BaseCamp to trasnfer my favorites. And what other voice is more desirable than "Jill". I will probably never change from that either!

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

garmin 2555 - recalculating

We HAVE to have "recalculating, recalculating". We drive a 35 foot motorhome and pull a 25 foot trailer. We need to know IMMEDIATELY if we've made a mistake so we can try to figure our best way back. We just bought one of these and tested it yesterday. We turned the wrong way on purpose. GPS was silent so I hit the bar on top and it was directing us 4 miles down to a clover-leaf type intersection and then 4 miles back. There were several u-turn possibilities within a half mile. This model is going back. Does anyone out there know of a new model that still has a recalculating notification? For now we will keep using our StreetPilot C330.

Not Likely

More than likely all the new models won't have it. My 2555 doesn't and it's a three year old model.

Don't Miss It

I, for one, do not miss it at all.

Doesn't matter...

never bothered me, can do with or without it.

.

Reading through this topic makes me realize that Garmin needs to make this user-configurable. Some like it and want it and some don't care for it at all. To force such a setting one way is just too limiting. Make it configurable and everyone is happy. This concept is not so hard to grasp & understand...apparently Garmin doesn't get it.

Gone from 2595

At first I was happy that it was gone. As time has passed I sometimes miss it. I think the main reason it was so annoying was that it repeated the word over and over until it figured out the new course. It was especially bad when for some reason you intentionally ignored the directions. If it only said it -once- it would be fine and as others have mentioned, actually very useful to point out you just missed your turn.

--
"Primum Non Nocere" 2595LMT Clear Channel and Navteq Traffic

I missed it too.

I have tendency listen to direction more instead of looking at the screen.

glad its gone

I'm glad they stopped the "recalculating" announcement. I had route that I took almost every day and it would announce for me to turn left even when it showed on the map to turn right. Even though I would make the correct turn to the right, it would recalculate. I sent a video off my phone to Garmin over a year ago thru and even thru 3 map updates they still havn't fixed the error.

Gone on 3597

I sometimes take preferred less traffic streets part of the way different than what GPS wants.
