We celebrate our wedding anniversary Sunday of Labor Day weekend -- 33 years this year!

While our wedding was on August 31 (1980), it was Sunday of the Labor Day weekend. We were married at the annual Labor Day folk dance camp where my wife's parents met, and where she went every year of her life. Our kids grew up there as well, part of the tradition.

Unfortunately, that tradition of the annual Labor Day folk dance camp ended two years ago, but we still celebrate our wedding anniversary on that Sunday, and some times on the 31st as well.

Back in the day when kids were the newspaper carriers and papers were porched. Now it's done by adults with 100's of houses on their route and the paper barely clears the sidewalk. Soon, we won't even have carriers.

When I was a kid, I had a great paper route in the afternoon after school. Actually paid good money. I made about $50 to $60 a month in late 1950's. Took pride in being able to porch almost every paper from my bike without riding up to the house. Sometimes had to stop and retrieve the paper from inside the bushes next to the porch.

Our paper is now delivered at about 4 or 5 AM by some adult in a car. The paper is usually 1 foot inside the driveway and if I left my car out overnight, the paper is almost guaranteed to be under it.

Are these second jobs for the adults who then have to go to their regular job? I don't know.

Delivered papers as a contractor in an effort to make ends meet while attending college.
As I recall she had to arrive at the drop site at 3:00am daily. She was given the stacks of papers for the route she was assigned and she was required to supply the rubber bands or if there was bad weather, bags and fold/roll the papers before heading out on her route. I believe she was paid like 30 cents per paper delivered. The routes were large and required a car. Ultimately she found the cost of gas, disruption in a regular sleep schedule and lack of flexibility (there was no time off or sick days) made the job undesirable.

Not sure if it's like that everywhere, but thought I'd share what I know of one persons experience.

Our weekly paper is delivered by a nice family in an old van. The sliding doors remain open. When Daddy stops, the kids jump out and run to the houses. I and others help them out with a gas card just before Christmas.

Today on 2001, I remeber going to work and early that morning, seeing the twin Toweers go down. I was in the area and will alway remember that day. we lost some good people that day, I had a few friend that worked there too.
