Custom Avoidance on NUVI 2555

Does anyone know a quicker way to create a Custom Avoidance on the 2555 or similar models.

Mapsource allows you to create a Custom Avoidance, but I was unable to download it to the NUVI 2555. As a result, the only option is to open up Custom Avoidance and scroll map to the avoidance. This is difficult enough, if you're close to the avoidance, but if the avoidance is a significant distance away, it's very tedious.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience?

.

There's likely no "quicker" way.

Custom Avoidances have never been transferable from MapSource to the GPS unit.

What about EPE

Have not tried this but think EPE would be one way to accomplish what you want.

With EPE it ought to be relatively easy to get to a particular point. Create all the points to avoid and save them in a gpx file in the GPX folder on the unit. This should get them into Saved Places.

This should make it easy to "set" that point and then
Settings > Navigation > Avoidances to mark it.

If you try it, let us know if it works.

Unfortunately, It's Not That Easy

Touching Custom Avoidance brings up the GPS Map of the area where the GPS is currently located. If you want to add an avoidance that is distant from the current location, you must scroll the map to where ever the avoidance roll is located. Just think how hard this would be, if the road is a long distance away.

You then touch the beginning of the road and then scroll again to the end of the road's avoidance area.

It can be very useful, but really difficult to use.

Try going to Mapsource and choose custom avoidance, but then think what it's like when it's on a 5" screen, without the ability to enter an address and go there on the screen.

It was my thought that if you use EPE to create saved places, they can be "set" as the current location so no scrolling would be necessary.

For a second avoidance, the process of "setting" a new current location would be repeated.

Maybe I am missing something.

Now I See

I'll try that and see if it works.

Thanks

I tried it last night. Set the GPS to Simulate. Took 10 minutes for it to get to the location and still did not get right.

I think Garmin just screwed up aagain and offered a tool that is almost impossible to use. They forced us to go to Basecamp that has no Custom Avoidance, from Mapsource that did, but couldn't be downloaded.

How lame is that.

set current location

I was not suggesting "simulate". You should "set location" however your unit does this. I looked at your manual and it was not immediately obvious how.

My nuvis have the ability to place myself anywhere I want and that becomes my current location. For example, I just recently checked the Subway POI file (for another thread) and had loaded Canadian Subway.

First I put my unit into GPS Simulation. Then, I did a Where To? > Categoies > downarrows > Custom POIs > Subway_CAN and the unit found one in Amherstburg, ON. I selected that location, chose the "i" (rather than Go) option and got a screen that let me "Set Location".

Then, when I backed out to the main screen and select View Map, there I was in Canada.

I went to Settings > Navigation > Custom Avoidances and I was still in Canada.

Now I Think I Understand

I'll try to set a location. It'll give me something to do, when there's diddly to watch on TV, some night.

As jgermann said, if your not near the area you'd like to avoid, the key is to enable the GPS simulator and then set that location:

  • Settings > Navigation > GPS Simulator
  • Where To? > Road/Area to avoid
  • Touch i, scroll down, then touch Set Location
  • Settings > Navigation > Custom Avoidances
  • Add Avoid Area/Road

Repeat for each avoidance...

Worked Like A Dream

This worked like a dream. I tried the simulation mode previously, but hit Go and it takes forever. This was quick and easy.

Thanks WAASup and jgermann and everyone else that helped with this.

Sorry I took so long to respond, but this was the first opportunity that I had.
