MyGarmin now tries to install Garmin Express

I've used myGarmin.com in the past to update maps on my nuvi. I could install the map both to my pc, to be available to Mapsource, and to my nuvi. With the most recent map update, myGarmin attempted to download and install Garmin Express. I killed the install and used my old copy of Map Updater.

Just

Just Garmin's attempt to get down to one piece of software (GE) for all updates, boths maps and software. Your myGarmin.com account has been doing this for quit awhile now.

I highly suggest that you stop Garmin Express from downloading!

I won't install express until there is no alternative

When I saw what was happening, I cancelled the install. In the past, when there had been a map update, I just used myGarmin without logging in and everything was ok. If I'm ever forced to use express for lifetime updates, I'll only let the program run as long as it takes to do the update.

GE is not a keeper

I concur ... GE is not a keeper at this time.

Ignore GE

Anything wrong leaving GE installed and using Map Updater instead?

Not at all.

It depends on how it is working on your computer.

OK.

I have done this (Windows 7) without any problems. I am not a fan of Garmin Express, so I keep the core update service and startup executable disabled most of the time. I have downloaded and installed a map update using Garmin MapUpdater while the Express services were still active, and didn't have any issues.

I will say that the latest version of Express (2.3.9.0) is a significant improvement over the older versions, especially in the user interface. But I still consider it "bloatware" and prefer the older MapUpdater and WebUpdater applications.

If

If anyone is having problems installing the newest version of Garmin Express (attempting to download from Garmin's website gets you an older version), here is a DIRECT LINK:

The new interface helps and, although I haven't yet atttempted a map update, it does a great job of updating other available firmware and software. With the ability to do quick backups of important data and transfer stuff between devices, Maybe Garmin is finally getting their head out of their a** and getting this software to work properly.

By the way, just setting it up to "not start when Windows opens", an option in this version, works really well and seems to stop the system drags, and other performance issues of earlier versions.

But..

After all this, does GE install the map update to your computer so that Basecamp can use it? Mac or Windows. If it doesn't install the map to the PC, the GE is still useless.

Sorry, this should read:

By the way, when you uncheck "automatically launch GE when a Garmin device is detected" under the "wheel" in the upper right corner of the screen GE works really well and seems to stop the system drags, and other performance issues of earlier versions.

In version 2.3.9.0 Garmin has made it pretty easy to download to your computer. Actually it has the same options as MapUpdater - Device Only, Device and Computer and Computer Only.

GE does seem to be getting better all the time which is great if the time will come when alternatives no longer work.

With this latest GE, have you checked to see if any processes, services, etc. are autoinstalled and running constantly in the background? Even though you report that system drag is reduced with "auto-launch upon detection" unchecked, I still wonder if GE is using some resources even when unchecked.

It steals cycles

If you leave Express on your computer, I would suggest that you disable the registry entry that causes Express to run at every startup and disable the "Service" that runs all the time in the tray.

I happen to like to use Autoruns to do this. If interested, look at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/40901#comment-339939

Nope

Mac is still 2.1.8.(62) and offers no Advanced Installation options. So, for the Max, GE is still useless.

Definitely challenged but GE

Definitely challenged but GE is getting better.

Latest Update

When I updated to 2013.20, I went right to my old copy of Garmin Map Updater. GE has driven me crazy in the past and I just skip it. Maybe when I hear that GE is worthy I will try it. Then again I still use MapSource as BaseCamp bugs me as well. Progress????

But a 2013.20 update would have been done a year ago. Suspect you mean 2014.20. wink

Giving GE One More Chance

Installed GE Version 2.3.10.0 today. Set it so that it only runs if I ask it to. No background start up. Will watch and see if it plays nice or not when I check for updates.

Garmin Express

I've been using Garmin Express on Windows 7 64bit for a few months now. I have no problems with it other than a few false update alerts.

Good to know GE will be better when I have to switch

I'm with CraigW. I'll stick with alternatives because they get they job done, but it's good to know that the major objections GE are being eliminated.

Garmin Express

I noticed this also when I went to download the new map. I was not happy but the map downloaded okay. But it did not give me the option to save the map on my computer. I deleted GE from my computer when it was finished.
