C550 now not working after trying to install new maps

With some of the problems previously posted I tried uploading new maps to my C550 first. Launched express, found the unit and said update was available. Started downloading and stopped saying there was an error.
Unit will now start up and goes to loading maps screen and shuts off. Tried reset button under front cover and hard rest by turning on and pressing lower left corner of screen. Neither solved the problem.
What did you use?
Did you try to update with Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater. If GE, try GMU!

I had a C550 that I gave to my sister when I got my Nuvi 765T. One thing I do recall was the C550 was persnickety about files and their integrity. You should still be able to get it into disk access mode by plugging it into a USB port. If that works, try running the update again. It sounds as if one of the map files is corrupted and that is throwing it for a loop. Also make sure it is running the latest firmware. The last one Garmin released made it a lot more tolerant of bad files. It wasn't perfect but it was better than the original firmware I was running.
