Always Green Icon-My Reply from Michael Wiegers-VP Engineering

As indicated in a previous thread, I wrote a letter (snail mail) to Michael Wiegers, VP of Engineering at Garmin.

I received a phone call 2 weeks after I mailed this from Canada, which I felt was a very fast response, considering mailing times. The call was from his executive assistant, who was not a technical person, but it was obvious that Mr. Wiegers had someone in Engineering relay this info.

In a nutshell, the operation of the Icon was changed, because Garmin's Customer Service had received many calls from people who could not understand why their Icon changed from Green to Grey and vice versa.

It would appear that many Garmin users either do not read the manual or do not understand the manual, and could not understand that the change to Grey meant that there was no signal.

I would suggest that POI Factory Garmin users inundate Garmin Customer Service and Garmin Ideas, and tell them that you want the Icon to turn Grey when there is no Signal and explain why. Mr. Wiegers assistant said that they do respond when they get numerous requests. We can only hope.

I would suggest that you use the subject line "Always Green, Never Grey", so that it catches their attention.

I may prove to be the eternal optimist, but my persistence has at least finally gotten an answer, even if it's not the answer we wanted. Maybe if we all persist, Garmin will listen.

Are you referring to the

Are you referring to the nuvis with the green, yellow, red traffic icons displayed on the map? My 2797 do esn't have any of this; you never really know if traffic is working unless you query ' or, there happens to be an alert warning enroute. It would be nice to have an initial grey icon to show the system is 'on' but not receiving signal yet.

There are a few this affects, but mainly the 24x5LMT, 25x5LMT, 34xx5 and 35x5, where the traffic icon was suppoed to turn grey when there was no signal. It now only turns grey when it's unplugged from the charger.
