New York City to Allow Speed Cameras

Note: Since this article was written last week, the New York Legislature voted successfully in the middle of the night Saturday to allow speed cameras in New York City...

"For many New York City drivers, the cadences of the common speeding ticket can be unfamiliar. Rare is the need to haggle with a police officer, pleading to be let off with a warning, or presenting the pregnant wife as Exhibit A in a bid for leniency. Rarer is the stretch of urban streetscape where an officer might safely approach an offending vehicle, as he would on a highway shoulder.

Under a proposal now gaining traction in Albany, though, New Yorkers may soon be answering to an authority more suited to the city’s topography: cameras that record the speed of a passing car and issue violations automatically."

NYC Speed Cameras

Just that in an article in the Daily News. The cameras seem to be aimed at school zones.

Points?

Do the vehicle owners get points on their licenses?

School Zone = almost anywhere

Baltimore City also requires cameras be in a "School Zone" which they define as within one mile of school including private schools. You have to really look hard to find a place not in a "school zone".

Cabs

These will probably be posted on the West Side Highway where the limit is 35 MPH and most people go 50 MPH +. The cabs violate every law possible so I'm sure they're gonna take a hit with this one.

speed demons

You would be surprised by the amount of people who not only won't stop for a school bus picking up or dropping off but then try to go around you when you stop.

I agree that far too many

I agree that far too many people either don't care about or are oblivious to the school bus laws.

New York

Like everything, when some legislation is not popular they wait for the people to be asleep and pass controversial laws.As you write " the New York Legislature voted successfully in the middle of the night " this is typical. Safety for whom for drivers or for politicians. A lie has many variations, the truth none. So when politicians try to explain themselves with lies you know some thing is not right.

these new speed cameras are

these new speed cameras are going to be mobile and they will move them periodically around different schools that have lots of speeding cars. i am all for not speeding around kids but this is a trap.

They'd Probably Say

They'd probably say - look at those legislators working late into the night to do their jobs!

Transparent aren't they!
