Missing Kernel

No not KFC,

I am currently running my 3790 and 855 in the car at the same time to look for any differences in functions.

When I turned on the 855 this morning I got an error message "Missing Kernel".

I have the LARGE JCV file on a 4GB SD card in the Garmin\JCV folder and the 2014.10 internally in the 855

I pulled the SD card and the 855 started to boot up, I immediately pushed the SD card back in as it was booting up and all worked well with full junction view and all.

What is the "Missing Kernel" error related to?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I would

I would think a "missing kernel" message would suggest something is missing or couldn't be found in the Operating System. Never heard of that happening with a Nuvi however.

The 855 is Linux-based. The kernel is the low-level operating system for the device, while the familiar display we see translates what we want to do into commands the kernel can understand and execute. The kernel is the most important part of Linux. Without it, you have a paperweight.

Try updating the firmware as the firmware may include a copy of the kernel. But be prepared to call Garmin.

Sounds like it's trying to boot from the SD card

From what you've described, It almost sounds like it's trying to boot from the SD card. Sort of like when you leave a floppy in a PC (an old one that still has a floppy drive) and it attempts to boot from it with a "Missing operating system" or similar error.

I wonder if there's something on your SD card that's causing it to do that, may be a hidden feature that Garmin can use to boot from a clean OS image on the SD card.

Makes sense

I'll bring the GPS in and connect it to the computer and also look at the SD card to see if there is anything on it that is different.
I also do not know what made me pull the SD card immediately when that happened..
I remember the floppy errors very well!
In any case I have a complete back-up of the 855 on my computer just done recently.
Thx

Honestly I didn't think of

Honestly I didn't think of that either, and I still have computers in the house that use floppy disks.

Follow up

Since I had the kernel error pop up it has never happened again. Who knows what may have been the cause of it.

Whatever it was, keep an eye

Whatever it was, keep an eye on it. It could be the beginning symptoms of something worse.
