3597LMTHD Stuck in Demo Mode

My recently purchased 3597 was stuck in demo mode. None of the things I tried (driving more than 10 mph for more than 30 seconds; trying to turn off GPS Simulator-it wouldn't uncheck) worked. The unit would re-boot and always come back up in Demo Mode without ever attempting to acquire satellites.

I called tech support and they walked me through getting the device to function. From the main page, select Volume; press and hold the upper right corner of the Master Volume page until the Diagnostics Page is displayed; scroll down to the Demo Mode menu item and press it; press Disable Demo Mode; go back to main page.

Seems to be working normally now and I don't use Demo Mode.

Demo Mode

The Demo Mode is usually set up for retail stores.
If you bought a floor model this may explain why it was in Demo Mode.

They do not come new in demo mode

They do not come new in demo mode so it sounds like you are correct and the unit was a store display at one time.

OP where did you buy this unit from and did they disclose that it was not a brand new unopened one?

Store Display?

If it was a store display and they did NOT inform you of it, I would go back to the store and demand a reduction in price, or return it.. An open box is one thing, but a store display is not something I would buy. Who knows how many times people put their paws on it and possibly reduce the life of the touchscreen.

Even though you seem to have a fix for the problem. I goggled it to just see what comes up. http://boardreader.com/thread/nuvi_3750_stuck_in_demo_mode_5... look at reply 4.

From Garmin

How do I get my device out of demo mode?
Answer:
Some Garmin automotive devices have a demo mode. When the demo mode is enabled, the device may display a demonstration video. Additionally, you may be able to use the regular navigation menus but the device will never go out of simulation mode.

If you've purchased one of the below devices and it is in demo mode, you may disable this mode by simply driving around with the device. To disable demo mode, you must be traveling at least 10 miles per hour for at least 30 seconds.

If a device is still in demo mode after meeting this criteria, please contact Garmin product support: http://www.garmin.com/us/support/contact

The following devices have demo mode:

I never knew you could get to the Diagnostics screen via the Volume page, but it works fine, thanks.

The way I've always got there was exactly the same as you discribe but I press the Speed indicator on the Map Screen and then press and hold speed/compass display in the center of the Speed Detail screen.

More Info

I should have provided more info in the OP. The unit was purchased new from Amazon. The first thing I did after unboxing it was to charge it. At that point it was NOT in demo mode. I used Garmin Express to update the firmware and North America maps (it came with 2013.30).

I also used GE to transfer info from my 3790 to the 3597. I also sent a route from MapQuest to it. Somewhere along the line the 3597 went into demo mode on its own. I have no idea exactly what I did that caused it. The first sign I got was when it displayed a screen that demo was active and it rebooted itself after about 5 seconds.

Thanks For Advising

It appears it's nothing you did wrong since obviously you didn't go into the developers screen to change the setting. I suspect Garmin Express was the culprit here, another reason why I refuse to use it.

Poor new user interface

I just bought the Nuvi 3597LMTHD from Amazon, and when it doesn't find any satellites in the first few minutes it asks if you want to turn off satellite checking. I didn't want it to keep bugging me so I said yes, figuring it would be easy to turn back on. Obviously it isn't.

I understand a store doesn't want shoppers turning off demo mode, but it shouldn't be so easy to get into demo mode accidentally. The prompt should specifically ask if the user wants demo mode. If the user just turns off satellite tracking, it shouldn't enter demo mode. It should just check GPS Simulator, so the user can uncheck it later when outside. I would put three options in that question; No, Demo Mode, GPS Off.

I'm glad there is a support board with answers for us poor users, but I sure hope this information gets back to the engineers responsible for these choices.

Not In Demo Mode

I highly doubt you received your 3597LMT form Amazon and it arrived in Demo Mode.

I think you are confusing Demo Mode.
I suspect you are using the Nuvi indoors and that is why you are receiving the satellite checking screen.
That screen WILL APPEAR when mostly indoors an unable to get a signal. I get that message all the time when indoors and tweaking my settings, this is normal; the Nuvi is NOT in Demo Mode.

Take the Nuvi outdoors with a clear view of the sky and remain stationary. It may take awhile the first time so remain patient while the Nuvi obtains satellites. When not using the Nuvi for some time it will take longer to receive satellites because it will need to update its cached satellite locations.

Are you possibly in Simulate Mode? If so, Turn Navigate back on and go outside.

When the Nuvi can't find satellites the message you get asks if you wish to continue looking for them. If you say NO then it doesn't go into Demo Mode, it goes into SIMULATION mode.

The only way I know of to get into( or out of) Demo Mode using a 3597 is through the Diagnostic Screens as explained earlier in this thread. I don't believe the 3597 will go into Demo Mode unless you specifically request it through those Diagnostic screens.

OK, all I know for sure is

OK, all I know for sure is that the GPS was not in demo mode when I received it yesterday, but by the time I put it in my car this morning I could not turn off GPS Simulator and it was cycling through demo screens and power cycling. So something I did while looking through menus and setting up simple options got it into demo mode. I never connected it to my computer or did anything "funny" other than answering that prompt with No.

I was finally able to get it out of demo mode using the instructions in this thread to access the back door into diagnostic mode.

Apparently, I am not alone in experiencing this. While looking for the right instructions (apparently every Nuvi generation has a different trick to get into diagnostic mode), I read several accounts of people finding themselves in demo mode because they first set up their GPS indoors.

Thanks - Learned Someting New From You

I've never heard of that happening before, I was always under the impression to enable or disable Demo Mode it had to be through the diagnostics screen.

I do believe what you say, this was caused by setting up the Nuvi for the first time indoors. This appears to be a bug in the software that allowed this to happen. The main thing is you now you know how to disable the Demo mode and your Nuvi should function normally.
Should this happen again I definitely would call Garmin (not email) and explain what has occurred.

get to diagnostic either way

I have the 3590LMT. I just tried it, and found out I can get to diagnostics either through the volume page, or speed/compass. I dunno what most of the acronyms mean, so guess I will not be going there much. On my 365T, I used to delete my traffic cache. Used to get really large on long trips. Not sure if it hurt anything, keeping them in there or not. I figure it was like clearing the cache out of the browser on a computer. Does anybody have any input on any of that? What the setting mean, and what can be reset, or deleted?

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

Clearing Tracks/Trip Log is a good idea. If you are worried you might want them later, then just make a backup copy of "Current.gpx" the next time you have your device attached to your computer.

take a look at
Understanding Favorites/Saved Places {G}

It talks about TracksTrip Logs and the fact that the device will "Archive" them once they exceed a certain size in "Current.gpx".

Stuck in Demo Mode

Thanks a lot. My new Zumo 590 got itself stuck in demo mode as well. This method works for the 590LM.

I updated maps and firmware (2.80) had GPS turned off indoor use while I had a play with it. Left it to charge overnight and then couldn't get out of demo mode. Going for a ride didn't work because the GPS is turned off.

Thanks again.

nuvi 55 also got into demo mode

My nuvi 55, which I just got yesterday, also went into demo mode, apparently spontaneously. The method described above worked for me -- bringing up the diagnostics page, then turning off demo mode from there.
