Nuvi not recognized by any Garmin software

I did a search and couldn't find anything on this so I thought it's be good to post. I just had a major headache trying to update the maps & software on a Nuvi 1450 with lifetime maps. Neither webupdater nor the new Garmin Express would even recognize the unit after connecting ot to the computer. Windows Explorer was able to search the device with no problem. Garmin support finally had me delete a few files after Explorer reported "0-bytes free".
Suddenly, the device is now recognized. Updates went fine, although when I asked them what happened to the mapupdater program that I used to use, the tech told me that "I HAD TO use Garmin Express from now on." When I asked again to confirm that, he again told me that I had no choice. VERY not happy with Garmin right now since finding that mapupdater is still good and even available from their site.
I'd need proof to accept what you were told
I doubt the Support person is correct unless your internet access is dial-up, satellite or Mobile Broadband Internet access.
What I'd do is uninstall Garmin Express, then when you hear the next map update is available, try MapUpdater and I bet it'll work.
To get all of North America for your next map update, your 1450 will need to have the map installed to a SD card:

If you don't have one on hand now, I suggest going out (Amazon, WalMart, RadioShack, etc.) and buying a SanDisk 8GB SD card now so you'll be ready for the next update with all of North America and space for the large jcv file if desired. I think your nuvi uses micro SD cards so don't get the standard or mini size.
MapUpdater (if not a link, use a "copy & paste" to your browser):

"...the tech told me that "I HAD TO use Garmin Express from now on..."
That Garmin guy was blowing smoke. I have a 1450 and I've used Mapupdater every time to easily and successfully install maps. And I can confirm CraigW's statement about using an SD card to hold the map. There's no decision as to where to install the map - Mapupdater automatically puts it on the SD card. I also copied the large .jcv file to the unit itself and everything works like a charm. And I have plenty of room on both the unit and the SD card still available for growth.
I plan to continue to use Mapupdater forever or until Garmin makes changes to the maps so that they won't work with Mapupdater anymore.

Garmin told
me to go to the website below to use the map updater without having to use Garmin Express...worked great for me....

I had to change data modes
I had to to change my new nuvi from its default MTP mode to Mass Storage mode for the software to recognize it.

MTP Mode?
I had to to change my new nuvi from its default MTP mode to Mass Storage mode for the software to recognize it.
Good suggestion but rebel260 indicated his Nuvi is a 1450. The 1450 does NOT have MTP mode.
Below is listing of units that use MTP mode:
