Nuvi 660 - Touch screen accuracy

*******JUNE 15th, 2007 UPDATE********* - Garmin came out with a software update (Version 3.80 "Enhanced Touch Screen sensitivity") that appears to have fixed the problem. After updating and testing, the phantom and inaccurate key presses has stopped. Thank you Garmin for your speedy resolution to our problem.
Original Post:
Has anyone had any problems with their Nuvi 660's and the accuracy of the touch screen? I've tried 3 Nuvi 660's now and all three seem to have a problem with phantom key presses. When I touch one thing, something else gets highlighted and activates as if I touched that instead of what's under my finger. I've run the screen re-calibration, called tech support and, as I said above, tried three different units. Tech support suggested trying another unit. But I'm up to 3 units now from three different stores (Wanted to try and get a different lot of units).
My wife's Nuvi 360, with smaller keys on the screen, doesn't seem to have any problems with screen touch accuracy or phantom key pressed.
Can anyone else confirm this problem?
I guess it's more of an inconvenience than anything else.
Gee, why didn't I think of that?
re-calibrate the screen... go to settings.
Hi Willsell,
If you read the entire post you'll see all the information about what was tried and what eventually fixed the unit. We've all tried the screen calibration first, that's a no-brainer. It eventually took a software update to fix it.
Thanks for your post.
Thank you, you beat me to it. . . like no one thought of that!

I didn't want to be to sarcastic. I can see how someone would read the title of a thread and quickly post their comment, thinking it was never thought of, to the thread.
I updated my original post at the top hoping it would catch the "first time readers" at the start.
Take care....

I tested a bunch more times
I tested a bunch more times today with no mis-keys. I'm glad because that was the only thing I don't like about the 660. Aside from a few missing features, but nothing major.

I agree, I haven't had ANY phantom key presses since I updated my software. I'm truly impressed that Garmin came out with a software update within 6 DAYS of this thread starting!!

I replied back to the original guy that responded to my email and told him it was fixed, thank you. They probably like to hear that once in a while instead of what they ususally get.
I didn't respond to the girl who told me to delete all of my poi's!
And I don't think it was just my email as much as the fact that I pasted in the link to this thread, which made it very obvious it is a widespread problem when they read it.

I did the same thing. The last e-mail from their tech support girl was asking for my serial number so they could create an RMA for me to return it for service. I responded with, "Why should I send it there and pay for shipping when I could just go back to Circuit City and have a new one immediately?" I also stated that returning my unit to Garmin would not address the obvious wide spread problem. Also mentioned that this was my third unit from 3 different stores.
I sent a follow up message later on in the day after the software update came out to let the girl know that it fixed my problem. I also said a BIG thanks in the e-mail for the fast response to the issue.
I had also posted a link to this site with my original e-mail way back when I started the thread. Not sure if they looked here, but at least we are all happy with the outcome.
no prob
I just received my 660 a couple of days ago (the 14th) and my touchscreen is very accurate. Not sure if I have the updated firmware version, but I'll check.
Touch screen accuracy WAS software-related

I am happy to report that since updating my 660's software to version 3.80, I, too, have not experienced anymore touch screen problems. Thanks to this forum and users like you who made their voices heard. Also, kudos to Garmin for an appropriate and timely software update.
Re: update for "Enhanced Touch Screen" v3.80
After some real quick typing it looks like this has fixed the issue. To soon to know if it is totally fixed but looks good so far.
Thanks for listening Garmin, please keep listening!
I really think it made a difference when we pointed them to this thread so they could see it wasn't isolated.
I hope they look to it for the feature suggestions also. I'm not looking for major things like some have suggested, like playing movies, etc. (I'm in the camp that says they could have left off the MP3 player and put in more nav. features).
I just want simple things, like being able to to assign the main screen display fields, put the elevation on the map screen, or at least the trip computer. Tell me how many hours the trip is in addition to the ETA (maybe I'm not leaving right now and I'm too lazy to do the math. Or the little arrow in the next turn field that some have suggested. Or a QWERTY keyboard option. It drives me crazy going between the Nuvi and my Blackberry! I think most of these are fairly simple updates.

No Problems Here
I have both a Nuvi 660 and 360, and once calibrated and updated, both systems have worked fine. AND I have fat fingers!!!!!. I have a buddy with especially large fingertips and he used a PDA stylus that he keeps in his car.
Whatever works!!!!

Update
There is a Nuvi software upgrade to 3.80 and the touch screen accuracy appears to be it's main focus. Not sure if this help.

Well, my system wasn't acting up WRT phantom key presses, but I updated anyway. We'll see if I didn't fix something that wasn't broken...

Worked for Me
Have been using my nuvi 660 for a couple of days and was getting a little frustrated with the random key presses. Updated this morning before leaving the house, and no issues so far.

680 Touchy Screen
I have the same problem with my 680. I thought I was hitting the wrong keys at times. I now use my wifes PDA wond and it seems to work much better than using my fingers. I will look for the update on the 680 and see if that works.

Update 3.8 Nuvi 660
I applied the update.
Now one can no longer use a stylus to select items.
I am going to revert back to 3.7.
V3.80 BEWARE
Installed V3.8 on an older Nuvi 660 - now I can no longer use a stylus to select items.
Screen recalibration did not help.
Sent e-mail to Garmin tech support to open a ticket.
I am reverting back to v3.7
Tried pencil with eraser as a stylus - works!
The flat end of the eraser works best (as opposed to the edge). Soooo...a larger flat surface works with the touchscreen.
If you need to revert to the Nuvi660 V3.70

Sorry the update didn't help
Sorry the update didn't help you. I was in the same boat as the rest with the 'phantom key press' issue, and this update did wonders. I actually just got an email last night that Garmin was creating a RMA to replace my unit after I had been emailing them about this issue. I thanked them but said for now, my problem had be cleared with this update.
While sometimes I may get frustrated with some of the feature sets they work on with some of their updates, Garmin support has yet to let me down (even if it take a bit for them to get back to you *grin*). If only I could same for other support departments of my pile of electronic toys!
Maybe The Update can be tweaked!
I agree Garmin has been responsive, and maybe they can tweak the settings to work for both finger touch and stylus, or give us a user option to choose the mode of operation.
"Now Working As Designed"
I think that would be the answer from Garmin - a previous update deviated from the original design, making touchscreens more sensitive than intended, and the most recent update fixed it.
When I got my 660, it noticed its touchscreen was significantly more sensitive than my 350, and I quickly adapted, and got used to how to make it work with minimal issues - and now that I have the upgrade, I'm re-learning to adjust to the new firmware.
Personally, I prefer the functionality after the upgrade, as with it, I seem to be far less likely to get unintended results.

Touch Screen Fixed
I have the 680 and updated to 3.8 from Garmin. It now doesn't go to places I didn't touch.

Nuvi Update 3.8
I updated by Garmin nuvi 660 from 3.7 to 3.8. The touch screen is very accurate. I am lucky I got it this week and happened upon the update. I was becoming frustrated really quick being a palm user and use to touchscreens..
Well is seems the new
Well is seems the new version has made the touchscreen super sensitive. I have mine mounted on th vent of my car. While I drive the map moves around and menu choices blip on and off. I have turned of the air to that vent but the problem remains.
My old nuvi 660 had no such issue, however I dropped her and her lcd cracked. I sent her in and they sent a new more sensitive girl with the updated software. I hope I can make this work. It is really a difficult situation. I am hoping a new recalibration will fix this problem, if not I am hoping to get on to Dr. Phil.
3.8 Not Working For Me
I installed the 3.8 upgrade into my 660. It seemed to work OK but then today (a week after install), I tried entering an address and all sorts of crazy letters started appearing. The back space arrow in the upper right did not work. Big buttons in other areas seem to work fine. So I tried downgrading back to 3.7. THAT WAS A FAILURE. I reinstalled 3.8 and it seems worse than before.
I also own a 670 and it is flawless. Any nmore ideas before I ask Garmin to send me a new unit?

No problems here
Someone sent me a private message asking if I was having the screen calibration issue, and unfortunately I accidently deleted it prior to responding.
So I'll respond here...
No issue at all. I updated the firmware to the latest version within 15 minutes of having it out of the box, and I've had zero issues.
I sent you the PM. Thanks
I sent you the PM. Thanks for the followup. I'm hoping to hear back from Garmin with an RMA so I can exchange the unit for a new one.
Tweaking the screen sensitivity
I wonder if anyone has gone to Garmin to ask about the next patch with regards to choosing what level of sensitivity the user wants to have. There are times when I would prefer finger-touch accuracy, there are other times when I would like to use my stylus.
v3.80 update - a bit confused
... My device arrived with version 3.8 installed so I never had any other firmware installed to play with. Does the unit allow itself to be downgraded? (say to the version 2.70 that was tested in the store?) I'd be interested in seeing if that removes the issue.
Hi neonate, did you have the touch screen accuracy issue even when you had version 3.8 installed?
I still have v3.7 and suffer from the touch screen accuracy issue that many have experienced. I am just thinking of updating to v3.8, but am concerned about some of the apparently conflicting experiences (and/or side effects) after the upgrade that others have found.
It seems the general experience from most is that v3.8 has fixed the accuracy problem, by making the touch screen LESS sensitive. But, AtroPunk's post above said the opposite (by making it MORE sensitive). Have I mis-read it?
Also, v3.80 seems to not to work with stylus ... just fingers only. Perhaps this is now "back to original design" as was mentioned by kch50428 above.
Are there other good/bad side effects of v3.8, particularly the bluetooth update that was mentioned above?
Cheers
I also updated my Nuvi to
I also updated my Nuvi to 3.8. I used to always use a stylus, but now I can't anymore. Is there anything other than reverting back to 3.7 that I can do to fix this? Also, If I have to revert back to 3.7, what other functions (if any) will be affected?
Nuvi 660 Touchscreen Okay
I bought the 660 from Buydig a couple of months ago. No touchscreen problems with it. This is my first GPS, or should I say my wifes since she has it all the time. I am thinking I may have to get my own.

Once I upgraded to V3.8, my phantom touch screen problems went away, and I've been problem free ever since. I have always used my fingers, so the loss of the ability to use a stylus hasn't been an issue.
Touch Screen Sensitivity to Heat
RE: Nuvi 660 - Touch screen accuracy, if you are having issues with the screen, try putting the screen face towards your air conditioner vent for about 15 seconds with the cool air blowing on it. See if that corrects the problem. This ghosting will usually occur in the summer and when the unit has been in a hot car for a while. Stronger sun, higher heat, quicker effect. This is NOT an issue with the unit, software, etc in my opinion, but a problem with the touch sensitive screen.
nuvi 360 touch screen accuracy
so i received my nuvi 360 replacement unit in the mail last week. i immediately noticed that the touch screen had some issues. it started to phantom press other buttons as others have complained about the 660. in addition to that, sometimes i'd have to press the screen button twice in order for it to execute the command. i re-calibrated several times, did a soft and hard reset, tech support didn't have a solution either. so once again, i had to send in my brand new nuvi 360 back to garmin. the first time i had to exchange it was b/c one day the unit shut off and wouldn't turn back on. now this time i have issues with the touch screen. i am losing faith in garmin...
I haven't read this whole
I haven't read this whole thread yet, but I am having the same problem lately with my Nuvi 360 which I recently updated to software level 4.70. My touchscreen keeps going out of calibration, and is esp a problem on the alphabetic keyboard screens. This may have started since recent software update. I have recalibrated several times and it soon goes out of calibration and becomes difficult to find desired key or to backspace, etc.
