Traffic on whole route

Does anyone know if the current, or future GPS's (3597LMTHD), will show the traffic on the whole route? For example, on a route from Chicago to Detroit, it would be nice to the see affect of the current Detroit traffic while I'm in Chicago pulling out of my driveway.

Normally it seems the traffic pulls only when you're in a local area. MSN did a better job with the national picture.

Thanks.

Traffic on Whole Route

I have not seen that with any Nav unit. I have Sirius/XM and usually switch to one of the traffic channels when approaching a major city. Unfortunately, the choices there are limited.

Not on the Garmin, but if

Not on the Garmin, but if you have a smart phone just go to the app or play stores and download the individual states dot apps. Such as Florida's 511 and so on. Not the ideal solution but it works.

Give it a try

The Garmin HD traffic covers the vicinity of Chicago and Detroit. It does not seem to have coverage in between.

http://www8.garmin.com/traffic/

On my GTM60 (SF Bay Area), it does show traffic conditions 100s of miles out, way into the coverage areas not contiguous with where I am.

You might give it a try by clicking on the traffic icon and in the subsequent screen click on traffic-on-route and see what shows up. You can also click on the traffic-conditions line and then the search (magnifying glass) icon. It would show traffic conditions in the coverage area(s). Please share with us what you find.

bandwidth is an obstacle

I think the transmission method used for at least some of the traffic receivers uses a sub-band from a local FM station. The channel is narrow, and with a moderate signal/noise ratio and non-aggressive coding, the available bits/second not so very much. I think the update time for the Los Angeles area has been stated here to be of the order of 15 minutes. So if they were trying to stuff national data through that thin little straw, the update delay time would not work out to our advantage.

Does anyone know how the HD scheme is transmitted? Maybe that one has more bytes/second to work with.

Zoom Out

I have the 3490LMTHD and I found if you zoom out you can see the whole route - what I do not know is how up to date it is out of the metro area you are in.

A Good Idea, yes.

What's the point?

If you leave Chicago, by the time you hit Detroit the traffic will have changed. Heck, it can change in a New York minute with an accident.

Traffic changes as you travel

I have a Nuvi 3490LMT with the HD traffic. On long trips I have noticed it warns about traffic at times as much as 100mi ahead, but by the time I got there it had cleared up. In my experience traffic warnings more then say an hour or two ahead of where you are, are of limited value. As you get closer it will update anyway and give a more detailed up to date report. I have had more of a problem with coverage with the HD traffic. YMMV

Agreed

Agreed. The HD traffic does provide much more traffic information on local streets. However, the traffic conditions on local streets changes faster than the freeways and the reported conditions tend to be more misses than hits in my experience.

experience with Sirius

My experience with Sirius so far... not as user friendly as some other info systems. Maybe as I use it more opinion will change.

Traffic

In any of my 3 Garmins I have never seen much traffic anywhere between Detroit and Laredo. Even on side trips via New Orleans, NADA.
Now maybe that is because I do not and never had HD traffic, just the FM variety. But regardless one way or another it does not bother me much. It is what it is !!!

I'm confused why you need to

I'm confused why you need to know about traffic 100 plus miles away from you unless the road will be shut down for most of the day..

My Experience

When paired with Garmin’s “Live Traffic” via the Smartphone Link app, the 3597 will display major traffic incidents (road or bridge closures, major construction, etc) along a route out to a distance of approximately 100 miles from your current location. When zoomed out, the screen will display a red circle with a white line through it. Touching the red circle will display details of the report.

All traffic incidents will alert when you are less than 50 miles from the report location. These reports show up as both an audible and on screen alert with details regardless of the screen zoom level.

I don’t have enough experience with HD Traffic on the 3597 using the included GTM60 traffic receiver cable to offer any useful comments.

Traffic always seems a

Traffic always seems a little behind so there's lapses between reporting on either end of traffic issues.

Traffic cameras are the best way to verify but you'd need a mobile connection.

Traffic always seems a

Towns amd cities are far apart and few in the big state of Texas. It is wide open country not like in the Eastern part of the USA. So don't be surprise if traffic don't show on your GPS.

+1 Just had a 6 hours trip

+1

Just had a 6 hours trip from San Fransisco downtown to Los Angeles downtown last week. I connected my Nuvicam to the Smart Link app Live traffic. I was given a full traffic report and estimated delay based on traffic incidents that are 60+ miles away from the moment I entered my final destination address.

Also, as the quoted member said, when you zoom out, you can see the traffic for hundreds of miles in each direction, if not the whole state!

For people who are wondering why anyone would care about traffic that is 100miles away ... Curiosity?! smile
