Poi Loader for Mac...any other users here?

When I load poi that I've d'loaded from the Factory, using Poi Loader for Mac, on the "Express" setting, I get nothing in terms of sound alerts on my nuvi 260w. When I check to see if the alerts are registered by going to custom poi and touching the first entry in a category, no alert shows on the screen.

When I re-load the poi, using the Manual setting, the alerts show when checking the first poi in a list, but the sound alerts are intermittent at best when traveling in the area of a poi.

Is anyone having problems w/ poi loader for mac other than me; if not, any suggestions to me to remedy my problems?

Thanks!

Tell us your POIs

POIs loaded with alerts will work when the POI location is very near your route. MrKenFL's Rest Areas Combined is a perfect example of a great POI for alerts because he has located the POI data points to be at the exit ramp from the highway and therefore right on the travelled route.

POIs with alerts active will oftentimes not sound an alert when the POI data points are the actual buildings set back from the roadway.

Tell us what files you are using that give you problems. Or choose a POI location on your nuvi that doesn't give alerts--and instead of hitting the green "Go" button, tap the "Show on Map," then zoom in and see how far back from your route the location is.

One solution to get alerts from POI files with "set backs" is to use TourGuides. Note that TourGuides require an associated audio file. It's also thought that TourGuides may involve more nuvi processing power so that they should be used in moderation.

Agree

I think to get alerts you have use the Manual setting. I also have problems converting the mp3 files to WAV required on the 3790. Even with the various conversion programs people list on here they still won't convert right. The time zone one is a pain especially.

Another way to get alerts is to use .gpx files (which is the technique I use and prefer).

If you will give us some more details, perhaps we could help you determine why there are problems converting .mp3 files to .wav files to work with your 3790. I assume they work with your 660.

Which timezone file are you using - the one by Don B called "new time zone.mp3 or the one by Bounder called "TimeZone.mp3"?

Thanks for the responses!

Poi I'm using include gas stations Mobil and Sunoco, restaurants including Bruegger's, Starbuck's and Tom Wahl's. I also have the rest areas, but I rarely travel on Interstates, etc., so they aren't pertinent at all times. All my poi are copied from Poi Factory.

This AM I loaded my poi (again) and used manual setting w/ the speed default of 0. Now, I'm re-loading the poi using the distance option and I'll use 1000 feet as the measure...maybe I'll leave the default number of feet at 0 and see what happens.

I'll let you know tomorrow what works, what doesn't.

Good luck -- and report back

There's no harm in trying a switch from speed alerts to distance alerts.

But if you find that your problem is essentially unchanged, your problem may be resolved by what's been suggested earlier in the thread. It is possible to get the alerts you desire so don't give up.

One final thought/suggestion: I understand your desire to get alerts and we're working towards that goal. But most folks here that use alerts use them sparingly. I don't know about Bruegger's or TW's, but my thought is "heaven help anyone travelling in a vehicle with alerts being sounded for each Starbuck's and a couple gas stations" in a city of any size and even some smaller towns. In fact, getting all these files to offer an alert may bring up new problems if multiple Custom POI alerts are trying to issue an alert nearly simultaneously in addition to getting driving directions from the nuvi.

If rest areas do give you alerts regularly on the occasions when you're on a highway while restaurants and gas stations do not alert as often as they should, my thought remains a POI file set-back issue.

If you're near a POI location that you want to have an alert but you don't see/hear one right now, see what happens if you create a route to that location, then drive or simulate a drive to the location. If an alert sounds when you arrive at that location at the end of your route to it, but the alert doe not sound if you're on a route that passes by that location, then it's almost certainly a set back issue and it can be resolved fairly well with a TourGuide.

I made some adjustments

This AM the alerts sounded and all seems fine. As I said, I reloaded them with the distance alert set at 1000 ft.

I've reset several locations using Google Earth decimal lat and long points. I put them right on the highway/driveway of the poi. I also took your advice and removed the .wav files from several of the all-too-frequent poi, e.g., Mobil.

So, I think all may be in place for the moment. On the other hand, I'll probably find some other itch to scratch w/ the nuvi 260w and need more help. The Tour Guide idea intrigues me....

We've ordered a new Jeep w/ UConnect including the Garmin nav option. (That will cost me a week of creeping through the local WalMart parking lot changing settings.)

Thanks again for all your help!!

Congrats on your success.

Yup, you'll certainly find something else to occupy your time tinkering with the nuvi and POI Loader, etc.

A great use for TourGuides is with the schools POI file:

Set up as a TourGuide, it can be used as a School Zone alert reminding you to slow down.
