New Categories

I have spent a few hours today reorganizing the POI file categories. I have added the following categories:

Places of worship
Lodging
Grocery/Convenience
Drug Stores/Pharmacy (currently empty, could be good next group project)
Health Clubs/Gyms

I changed a lot of files today in the hopes that things will be easier to find.

Please, PLEASE, Please, try not to type in all caps.. when one does that, it looks like your yelling.. and is very hard to read..

to find your poi, you need to go to the custom popi and they should be listed there..

SD Card on 330

fisherman333 wrote:

I'm surprised you can find them at all. The SD slot on the 330 is only for loading different maps. It does not support POI's being loaded there.

(And lose the all-caps'... it's considered as shouting)

same here i find the poi,s if i do a search so if thats the only way with this model thats cool with me. caio no yelling please.

SD Card and C340.....

Fisherman,
Can you tell us what format you loaded on your SD Card and how you "search" for the POI's placed on it?
If there is a way to load them and find them... there would be a bunch of us really interested.

Thanks much!

C330

I, for one, would like to know how you did that. I can't get my C330 to recognise a SD card.

Miss Poi

is it possible that....

...the poi's are loaded to the sd card, but the search is actually a search of the pre-installed poi?

or

...the poi's are actually loaded to the internal memory.

Can c320/c330/c340 read POI data from SD memory card?

or

there,s always 1... i did a name search for walmart on the unit without memory card in nothing came up downloaded walmarts poi,s from this site to card inserted card into unit did another search and wala walmart was there i also did this for best buy and circuit city i downloaded all 3 into 1 folder then sent it to the card. so they are not preinstalled in the unit. OR i was dreaming it all and didnt go into the walmart i found on the gps time to go fishing caio

that's strange

Since the c330 has been reported not to be able to read custom poi's from the sd card.

Let me see if I follow. You searched for walmart, (wasn't there), d/l the walmart file (from here) to card (how did you get the file to the card?), inserted the card to gpsr, and walmart was there.

How did you get the file to the sd card?
Did you use Garmin poi loader?

Is it possible that you put the card into the gpsr, fired up poi loader and loaded the walmart file to the 330's internal memory? Thereby leaving you with the impression that you actually loaded the data to the sd card.

Here is how it works with my c550 (which can read from an sd card)

I d/l a poi file from here, connect my c550 to computer, it shows up as a separate drive (drive letter H), the installed SD card shows up as a separate drive (drive letter J), fire up garmin poi loader, select where to send files, I'll select Drive H or J, select the files to load, finish the process and that's that.

I'm not sure that the c330 is seen as a separate drive, as well as any inserted SD card. Therefore, when you fired up the garmin poi loader, it automatically selected the 330's internal memory to store the file.
I believe what you are seeing is the walmart file that was d/l from here but it's installed on your units internal memory. Backtrack the steps or perhaps another c330 user can jump in with the finer details.

In the mean time, let's go fishin'

Please explain downloading to the SD card. Do you have software that allows this?? Does your computer have a SD slot where you can do this or other means? Since you stated you downloaded to card, would love to do this as you did if I can resolve how you did it. I know other c330 owners would like to know, please share...

Another Thai food addict

Please do. I confess. I'm guilty of being a Thai food addict. What's the punishment for that?

Once, I drove 10 hours to Atlanta with another family looking for Thai food. Found one near the hotel by accident, still savoring the taste of that fish. YUMMY!!!

Ms. POI, I'll gladly pay another $5.00 to download this new POI. Do it NOW!!!!!!!!

Ok, I get that, but how did you hook the sd card to your computer? I'm aware there are SD card readers, but am not sure what is needed to write to a SD card, same device? Thanks for your help, this is very interesting....

Edit: I did find out that the card readers do write, just to follow up, however, what model are you using? What size of SD card did you use, any other tips before I go and try this out, thanks...

Edit2: Did POI loader recognize the SD card and/or reader? Since I don't have one yet, just wondering as when I run POI Loader, it wants my c330 unit connected before it will do anything else. However, I do note it says it will write to SD card. I assumed this was to be on the unit, maybe not???? Thanks, once again for any information you can provide...

Yes, POI loader will recognize a SD card reader. I have one built into my laptop and can write to it through POI loader.

POI Files

Miss POI:

First thanks for the great work..much appreciated.

FYI the new maps (NT 2008) for my Garmin nuvi 360 have all the National Parks, Seashores, Monuments, et al included with proper adresses and phone numbers (not to mention locations). Also the hotels listed in one of the poi files apepars to have already been included in the new map release plus some.

Bottom line is a lot of the POI information on the site appears to have been included in the NT 2008 map release for garmin (not sure of other GPS systems.

I didn't see driving adis such as toll booths/amounts, rest areas or weigh stns included and I suspect a lot of special interest stuff like "Stink Spots" and red camera sites are not included

I would recommend the various authors take a look at their files to ensure they are still relevant.

I would disagree...

trbirchall wrote:

Well, that's all relative. I for one like to be able to quickly get a list of nearest favorite restaurants with only a few 'clicks' via custom POIs instead of having to wade through several screens (plus having to type in enough letters to be unique enough) to retrieve similar list. Plus it does take longer using the built-in since it has to perform a database query.

Garmin nüvi® 660, iPhone 8gb (Technology is not the solution. It's only a tool to help you achieve it.)

I agree with the disagreement

I fully concur that a specific POI list is desireable for a number of reasons - like you mentioned. My comments were not meant as criticism but rather a comment. Where it came to the fore is I was updating the national park lists with phone numbers and then found the info was already in the database! The same aplied to the golf courses!!

Proximity alarms make great sense!!

Thanks, I figured that was the case, now if I can get the c330 to recognize a SD card, of course, I gotta go buy a read/write adapter since my laptop doesn't have one (old, cheaper model, ya know) and a SD card. Won't break the bank, but sure hope it works as described by Fisherman333...

i used a 1 gb card i used a card reader from walmart connected to usb i d/l the poi,s and icons from this site to a folder using the garmen poi loader, before you open the garmin loader make sure your card is connected, open garmin poi loader welcome screen click (next) find device locate the card i think its (f) then d/l the poi folder to the card.remember each time you d/l new poi,s to card it delete,s what ever was on it so d/l everything you want in folder before sending it to the card this don,t mean you can,t come back and remove or add to the card later it just mean,s that what ever you want on the gps at the time is in the folder before you d/l it to the card. put the card in gps and do a name search for your poi,s.fyi the gps unit was not connected to the pc only the card reader with the card in it. also create a new folder on desk top call it poi,s so when you have to put the poi,s somewhere there they are at least that,s what i did. good luck

Thanks fisherman333

I really appreciate your response and I know if this works for all c330 owners as it has for you, we will be grateful that you were able to discover how to do this. And, even if it doesn't, I'll find other uses for the card and reader, so won't be out anything, thanks again!!!!

Well, today I did all the things you did and said to do, didn't work for me. Questions:
1. Is your unit a c330?
2. What Map version are you uing?
3. What software version are you using?
4. Were all your POI's in one folder or separate folders?

On a happier note, I WAS able to load Alaska and all the Canada maps on the SD card using your methods, so am quite happy about that, therefore no real loss, just wanted to know if I missed something or I have different versions of things than you do. Thanks for your help and I know all c330 owners will be thankful as well. You've definately started the ball rolling smile :)...

yes c330 always put poi,s in

yes c330 always put poi,s in 1 folder then send that folder to sd card not sure what map or software version what ever was in it when i bought it 3 months ago gps is in the car next chance i get i will find that info out and post dont understand if alaska and canada loaded don,t know why the stores didn,t. have the pc read the card to confirm the store,s are not there i take it you did a name search on unit and spelled out walmart and nothing came up.fyi each time you d/l to card what ever was on card is deleted so make sure ALL poi,s are in 1 folder before sending that folder to card good luck.........

Ok, will try that

***Garmin Nuvi 350/StreetPilot c340***

Where were you when I needed such info

I was in DC in early July. I was looking for Thai restaurants. Still, it's not too late. I'll back in DC some time.

Regarding Thai...

I *think* I have all of the New Jersey Thai restaurants in a file. I'm not sure that it's absolutely accurate though, for any that might have gone out of business. What I want to try to do is put them all into Google Earth, and then export the coordinates so we can use the file in our GPSes. I've never exported coordinates from Google Earth though so I have to learn how to do it.

I don't know why there's no web site that lists all of the Thai restaurants. There are a few that claim to list the restaurants, but the lists for New Jersey, for example, cover only about 20% of them.

Thai Restaurants

Why don't you try Citysearch.com they have a list of Thai restaurants. See what you get. Can't hurt. :)

new category suggestion -- restaurants with gluten-Free menus

Dear Miss POI,

Several of the restaurants in the list here offer a gluten-free menu. It might be a good idea to have those places also show up in a category for restaurants that offer gluten-free menus. I have loaded the following in my GPSr: Bugaboo Creek, Outback, Shanes Rib Shack.

Thank you, Miss POI. It is most appreciated. Those of us with a restricted diet often search hard to find places we can go out to eat with friends. It makes things easier if we can find those restaurants in one place. It is also good for those businesses.

I agree... Since my wife is Thai, everytime we go on a trip, we spend hours trying to find a Thai restaurant. Please let me know if and when you have POI for them. And let me say, since I am new to all of this POI stuff, I think this site is terrific and I marvel at all of the things on it. You and the others members are providing a wonderful service. Thanks!
