Extras Vs Favorites

I am somewhat confused regarding Extras and Favorites. When you download a gpx file the device how do you determine if it will appear as a favorite or as a custom poi?

On most Garmin models the POIs that you add go into a folder that Garmin calls Extras.
On the main menu screen press the Extras icon and you will find a line called Custom POIs. That where the POIs you loaded are found.

POI count limitations on loading.

My GPS device has a limit of 500 Favorites. Custom POIs are only limited by the amount of memory my GPS can hold.

Use MapSource or BaseCamp to Send Waypoints to your GPS that get imported into Favorites.

Use Garmin's POI Loader program to compile and load Custom POIs from either csv or gpx files. POI loader makes subcategories of each file name and one folder level deep subcategory names.

The advantage of a gpx file over a csv file is that gpx files can be loaded into MapSource or imported into BaseCamp for route planning. BaseCamp has a disturbing habit of making a new category on my GPS Favorites for each list name that contains a particular Waypoint.

I limit the number of Waypoints in my MapSource files and my BaseCamp lists to limit the number of Favorites to under the 500 Favorite limit of my device.

If you DOWNLOAD A GPX FILE TO THE DEVICE, it will appear as a Favorite.

If you LOAD THE GPX FILE USING POI LOADER, it will become a Custom POI.

Saved/Favorite

At the risk of stating the obvious, an individual location, such as the current destination, result of a search through the gps unit can be saved as one of the favorites/saved and categorized.

you can manually delete a Favorite from your device, you cannot manually delete an Extra.
