kosher restaurants and fast food locations

Any interest in creating and maintaining a list of kosher restaurants and fast food locations in the U.S.

Does not sound easy

It does not sound easy to get a list of kosher restaurants throughout the country because they usually are not nationwide chains.

I'd load that on my unit.

I 2nd the motion "it will not be easy"

Just because a restaurant is Jewish owned and serve Jewish meals doesn’t make it Kosher

As an example take “Flakowitz of Boynton Restaurant” in Boynton Beach FL, they serve Gefilte Fish, Israeli Salad, Choice of Nova, Lox, Whitefish, Sable, Kippered Salmon, Sturgeon and Matzo Ball soup.

They also serve bacon and sausage for breakfast and there goes that Kosher thing out the window.

If there is enough interest a file can be started with locations and a comment about kosher certification and then added to by additional users. Please comment

Kosher Restaurants

I Started a file like that about a week ago, didn't see this thread until today. I'm going to do this state by state, and I started with NY. Don't know how to solve the certification issue yet, short of making sure that there's a phone number included.

If anyone has any ideas, I'm open for suggestions.

kosher resaurants

Have you uploaded? If so where is link. How can we add to it? Frank H.

Is there a way to solicit GPS locations on Facebook or Twitter?

Seems like the Kosher restaurant's would want to make themselves know. However, I have no idea how to do this.

Here's a POI node I submitted w/ 26 Kosher restaurants located in Southern California. Feel free to submit/add to it...

Re: Certifications

(FWIW--please note I am not an Orthodox Jew, but do know folks who are and who do keep kosher)

One of the complicating things (as I understand it) is the fact there are multiple groups issuing kosher certification in the US--and not all groups accept heshers and certification from all groups.

That said--probably the best fix (for those who actually NEED to know who certified, etc.) is to note the particular certifying body has noted it kosher and let folks use their best judgement on what particular certifying bodies they or their rabbi trusts (probably in the comment or description field in EPE).

Kosher Restaurants POI Updated

I have updated (added) some additional restaurants in Southern California and Las Vegas...

Let's work together

Hi beach bum, since you're already on the roll here, how about we work together on this? I'll give you east coast locations, and you work the west coast, and we'll make it happen?

I have a few in .csv format, where should I send them?

Other sources

Shlomie;

I tried to merge your CSV POI database using Extra POI Editor (V 5.32), but kept getting numerous errors. It also generated script errors when opened w/ Extra POI Editor as a stand alone POI database. What pgm are you using to create/edit it?

Kosher Food POI

I still do it the old way, manually. In my GPS I like to keep it broken up by State, but that would make to many files, so here I combine them into one. But, I leave an empty line between each State. that's why there's all these err lines, but it works. If you could send your file to me, I'll combine them in the next update. At this time, I'm updating the file about once a month. Still compiling data.

Thanks,
Shlomie

the problem with this

Shlomie

Is it doesn't work for the average user. All they know is there are errors in the file and it won't load. Leaving a line between the states may make it pretty, but neither the computer or the GPS needs or wants it.

It appears that one issue with the Shamash Kosher data is that stores and restaurants listed may not adhere to strict Kosher standards either. I looked up some local information and there were obvious errors.
