What a nasty surprise Garmin has put me through... the maps of Canada and USA do not fit on the GPS unit, so it suggests to install the the SD card, which I bought. It's an 8gb card. Unfortunately, their AWFUL software doesnt recognize it. And it's not just me. I've read other threads here of the same problem. The solution is mind-numbing to say the least and confusing.
I've left a message to Garmin support, but I doubt they will be of any help. Why can't Garmin fix their crappy software??? And, on a further note to that, why don't they start adding more memory to the unit, like 16gb or even 32gb since memory is so cheap now, instead of that measly 2gb ??
If I knew I'd have so many problems with this unit, I would not buy Garmin. I will not recommend Garmin to anyone for this reason alone.
Unlimited FREE map update sounds appealing, but the catch is that you simply cant do it with the supplied software. How scandalous is that???
Same experience here..........

I am also frustrated. My father in law had this unit for 3 years and then fell for the maps update like described above here. The same sequence occurred. My father in law gave me the "unloadable Garmin" and purchased a brand new one. The weird thing about this to me is that the unit's initial failure was when it literally blanked out and did not have any data relative to certain states...........not only are you unable to link and update maps (because their software does not recognize the USB device), now this unit is basically non-usable here in Michigan, but does contain map info for Ohio, Illinois, etc..........just now Michigan and some other states. I don't get it.........but the bottom line is that Garmin really needs to step up to the plate and do what's right for the customer. This is not the way to treat loyal customers. Disappointing.
Nuvi 1300 won't recognize the maps on my SD card
I am trying to load the maps for the lower 49 states on my Garmin and I didn't have enough room. I was prompted to add a micro SD card ( between 4 - 8 gigs ). I went and bought the card ( 8 gig ) and placed it in the Garmin. Once I went to the updater I was able to download the maps to the card. However, when I turn my Garmin on I now get a message saying that it contains no usable maps. I don't understand why it will not work. My computer recognizes the card and it is formatted in FAT32. Can you help?
Have you tried a Master Reset?

Partition table of your SD Card
It's the partitioning of the SD Card!!!
I struggled for days with my Garmin and different SD cards from all brands, qualities, speeds, specs.
Finally I found out that SD cards must be very strictly partitioned: you must have only 1 PRIMARY PARTITION on the card. Several tools on windows like Windows' disk management tool and MiniTool's Partition Editor create nested partitions... phones and gps devices can't open those.
How I found this out is when I got home and tried to manipulate some map images. Linux saved my day and now I can navigate american maps with a european Nuvi.
So the tip here is: try to see if your SD card has been partitioned to have EXTENDED partitions or LOGICAL partitions. IF that's the case you need to delete them, create a primary partition, format it to FAT32, and re-copy your maps.
Partition table to be checked

test it on a different
test it on a different computer - SD cards work on one pc will not work on another so try a different pc then insert in gps and see if it works.
