Update Firmware Only (3490LMT)

It's been over a year since I actually did an update. I don't want to update the maps just yet in my unit due to the complaints about LA but I would like to update the firmware only. Since it's been awhile. I can't quite remember if I can update the firmware only w/o a mapset update using WebUpdater. I have the entire unit backed up (2012.40 / v.6.20) and I'd like to bring just the firmware up to v.7.50. I know there's a way to do this but can't remember. I miss the days when you could download these firmware updates directly from Garmin and install them manually.

I was going to test this but the website is giving me grief. In myGarmin it gave you two choices, 1 map updates and 2 software. Was going to see if i could by pass the webupdater. I would say that you do have a choice, and I think you can use web updater to do it. Remember, you have plenty of time. It d/l's the files first before transferring. You can kill it anytime.

Garmin's WebUpdater software is the best choice for just updating the firmware on your GPS.
Running Webupdater will first of all download the latest firmware update. It will then give you the opportunity to update various other software items, such as GPS software, voices, etc. but you can decline any or all of these. Webupdater will not even try to update your maps as it has no facility to do that.

I do it all the time with my 255. I don't have a lifetime map sub for it. "My Garmin" will bug me about the old map I have on it, but Webupdater doesn't seem to know or care.

Ok, thanks. I have a new PC so all this software needs to be re-installed. I think I had used Garmin Communicator(?) which is a plug-in tied to the browser if I recall and then I switched to Webupdater. It's been a long while so I can't quite remember.
OK, I'll give it a go this week as I'm traveling out west next week.

I'm pretty certain that Web Updater requires Garmin Communicator. When you run Updater, you should get a pop-up for Communicator to install.

If you use Communicator or MyGarmin, it gives you the option to update maps. If you use WebUpdater it only gives you the option to update the software.

That's right. I forgot. Webupdater is for everything BUT the mapset.
