Pinch To Zoom

I've been happy with my Garmin units since buying a Nuvi 200W, but have been increasingly annoyed by the clunky (and unsafe) methods of changing map views on the fly. Touch the screen and wait for it to go into the mode that lets you pan, then use + and - buttons to zoom in and out. Really? I know you should pull over, etc. to 'play' with the map but let's face it .. sometimes you just need a little bit of an overview very quickly to confirm your navigation while you're in traffic.

Well, on a recent trip I took along my 10" tablet and found the perfect spot for it in the center of the truck seat & resting at a good angle on the edge of the center cup holders. I used it MUCH more than my 765T! My wife could easily see it too, without leaning toward the Nuvi or me twisting it for her to see. A quick no eyes needed feel and a motion with two fingers on the tablet was perfect to put the map into a zoom that allowed me to VERY quickly glance at the map and confirm what I needed to. And panning was way faster and smoother than the Nuvi. Even unzoomed, the 10" tablet usually showed me much more map while everything else was a similar size as the 765. At the end of the trip I decided that I was finally ready to give up my PND in favor of the tablet, if not the 10" then a 7".

Now, I see that Garmin's $300 range Nuvi's (3450, 3550, 3590) have "Pinch To Zoom". About time, but as pricey as a 7" or even a 10" tablet. Nav apps for tablets (forget phones .. too small a display for us old folks) are pretty good now, and should only get better, imo.

Who here has a "Pinch To Zoom" PND? What do you think? There's no question in my mind that ALL PND's need to have simpler & faster touch navigation but is there still a place for them even with a proper mount for a small tablet and/or a large phone? I never thought I'd say this, but I doubt it.

I have pinch to zoom on my 3790LMT

I have pinch to zoom on my 3790LMT that I bought from Walmart for around $150 in April and it works great, very quick both for zooming in and out.

Thanx rjrsw. Good to know,

Thanx rjrsw. Good to know, and now we're talking reasonable price! grin

Does it also pan quickly from the first touch?

Pinch would be nice

My old 780 is getting a bit tired, and I am somewhat uncertain about using my tablet...as more interaction capabilities are more distracting.

Less distracting, I think

Actually, the CoPilot app is just like the Nuvi interface but bigger. I hadn't yet bought the navigation version while on the trip though, but since have and it looks very similar as well. Not nore distracting imo, but rather less so because it's a bigger display and so much more responsive.

Don't leave home without 'em

When I walk out the door, much to my wife's chagrin, I'm carring my tablet, my smart phone, my Kindle, my gps (with my backup GPS already in the trunk), and two 1tb portable hard drives ... one of which holds backups of documents, music, movies and ebooks from my laptop (which I leave at home) while the other hard drive serves as a back-up of my back-up portable hard drive.

All devices serve their purpose, better than the other devices which might serve a similar purpose (but not a well as my selected device).

To each his/her own ... but even I admit it's getting a bit ridiculous.

I actually ran across my old briefcase (which I carried to work years ago) ... and thought, hmmm, I'll bet that old thing could hold all my devices ... but then decided it would be too much trouble and distraction to open and shut each time I wanted to use one of my devices.

Maybe I need a tool belt ... build to hold all my electronic toys.

I'm glad a tablet lying on the cup holders works for the OP ... but if I did that, where were I put my TWO(2) Big Gulp fountain drinks from my local gas station? (My first stop of any day).

Garmin 205, 260W, 1450LMT, 2460LMT, HEREwego for iPhone ... all still mapping strong.

.

I have both the 3790 and 3490. Both have pinch to zoom but I personally do not use it. I'm just too used to the zoom in/out buttons. It's much easier and less distracting for me to just hit the buttons than to concentrate on controlling the pinch to zoom while driving.

Pinch to zoom

I like the +/- zoom functions. It is easy to hit without being too distracted from my driving. I am not sure if the ability to pinch to zoom would be more or less distracting.

alternative to pinch

One of the recent updates to Google Maps on my phone included a nice alternative to pinch. You can double-tap and then drag up to zoom in or drag down to zoom out. I hope other apps adopt that approach; I like it much better.

Now

How on earth did you know want I carry out to the car for every trip my wife and I make. grin
