My 1300 is making me NUTS!

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1300. I love it, well until a bit ago. I was trying to upgrade the maps and messed it up somehow. Totally my fault. Now it says there is a map upgrade, but it refuses to apply it. I have tried to contact Garmin via e-mail and we are just frustrating each other.
What I would like to know, is there a way to completely erase the system and reload? I did a reset, okay personal stuff is gone. I have a back up of that.
But I am wondering, like my pc, do I format the darn thing and start over? Can I? I really dont want to go buy a new one.
By the way, this is TOTALLY my fault. I am not sure how I screwed up, but I know I did. This is not a stolen unit either. I am the owner and user of it.
Thanks!
Backup?
Don't format it!!
Did you backup your entire 1300 before the failed update? If you did, you can just copy back all of the files and folders.
I always back up everything on my 660 before doing any update, just in case something goes wrong.

Don't Format
As Gary A suggested.
First, welcome to the site.
Can you please furnish some more detailed information regarding your problem.
Assuming the attempted map update caused this problem, what did you do to make you to believe it was totally your fault.
1- Did you use lifetime map updater to download the map or use "My Maps\Manage Maps" after signing into your account?
2- What happens when you attempt to boot the Nuvi?
3- If using Windows Explorer and accessing the Nuvi drive, do you see the file gmapprom.img in the Garmin folder?
