Not good

Unfortunately, many people who get stuck driving in areas with these cameras, never get to vote on the cameras or the greedy politicians who contract with greedy companies to put them up. I'm sure you don't get to vote in those other towns, but you may have to drive through them on your daily business. It's pretty much a form of taxation without representation.

Outside Source Of Income

That is the situation in Oldsmar Florida, where the red light cameras are installed at nearly every intersection on Tampa Road, a major commuter thoroughfare connecting Tampa and Clearwater. Some local residents may get caught, but it seems to be aimed mostly at non-residents.

In Riverside

In Riverside, CA they are removing about half the red light cameras. They are too expensive to operate, and the revenue from tickets for running red lights to not ofset the costs.

Interesting

That's interesting. They removed cameras from Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg because it was negatively impacting shoppers, ergo money.

Nassau County, NY

Nassau County here on Long Island has seen a revenue drop from the fifty they have so they are installing fifty more. In the meantime, the money collected from these cameras has been diverted to other purposes.

hope that the camera

hope that the camera companies go broke, and the politicians get throw out of office.

RLC

Well if the revenues are falling that would be an indication that the RLC's are achieving their purpose which is to STOP redlight runners.

As per someones comment that this is a taxation, if you do not run red lights then you are not being "TAXED"! Plain and simple.

next step

What's the next step if it does deter red light running and revenues fall below costs of cameras? I was talking with a neighbor the other night, who's an ex cop, and we both said the same thing. If we come to an intersection with an RLC, we wait for the light to turn green, even though right turn is permissible after coming to a complete stop. I see that a lot at a couple of intersections, and whether I'm the lead vehicle or in the line, nobody gets bent over not turning on red. Great minds think alike, and we are all like "**** them, we'll wait for green."

good point, what if...

How many people who are against cameras in their own town would vote for them if citizens of that town were exempt from the fines?

Me too

As per someones comment that this is a taxation, if you do not run red lights then you are not being "TAXED"! Plain and simple.

This is quoted from the first article link, describing why revenue is falling.

"The biggest factor to decreased revenue is when there is road construction, which means the cameras are turned off, said finance director Steve Noble.

He said the village took another hit when, without warning or explanation, the Illinois Department of Transportation took down "No Turn on Red" signs at the highly traveled intersection of Willow and Waukegan roads.

Not being able to cite motorists for turning right on a red light cost the village more than a half-million dollars, records show. From May 2010 through April 2011, red light camera revenue was $858,541. The following fiscal year, it dipped to $270,594."

Actually stopping at red lights is not the only reason revenues are going down. And that's such a simple determination anyway. It's amazing how the cameras come down because they're not profitable. What about safety then?
