Getting Ready For Windows 8

I am getting ready to reformat my main (C) drive and install Windows 8 and need to be sure i backup everything i might need to reinstall Basecamp and Mapsource. Not going to be at the head of the line to get 8 but soon if i don't hear a lot of complaints about Windows 8. My Garmin Nuvi 1350T is up to date as is Basecamp/Mapsource. i think i have most of it backed up on second hard drive but don't won't to overlook anything...any advice?

Windows 8

I agree windows 8 is geared more toward tablet pcs. If you don't have a touch screen you won't get the full benefit from it

I received an offer from Dell

Pre-order Windows 8 Pro for $38.00. I thought that sounded like a good deal. I'm running Windows 7 Premium 64 bit.
First thought Is there a 32 and 64 bit version of Win 8? Will my Office programs be compatible? Think I'll hold onto my $38 bucks. Hell , I still miss not having a serial and parallel port.

The way....

The way I see it...people will always have negative feelings about change until they see it for themselves...

XP

I still have two laptops, one netbook, and two desktops running XP and one laptop running windows 7.

Software Update Advice

Wait until Windows 8 is stable before you install the operating system. If you have an O/S that is working for you now, do not abandon it for the latest and greatest. You may find yourself to be a guinea pig!

A stupid thought

What does Windows 8 have anything to do with Garmin GPS?

Good point ..

The original post asked specifically about Garmin software. As often happens (not just on this site, but in communities all over the Internet) a question like...

"I intend to do 'x' and would like some advice on how best to do it."

...generates an overwhelming number of responses regarding why you should NOT do 'x'. In this case

x = "upgrade to Windows 8"

The majority of businesses have finally upgraded to Windows 7 so they aren't going to hop on the Windows 8 bandwagon right away.

If you get a new computer, then yes, get Windows 8, but upgrading just for the sake of upgrading, I don't think so. That's my 2 cents worth.

I agree with you, except I think Windows 7 is darn good. NO Windows 8 for me, I just (3 months ago) upgraded to Windows 7. As long as everything works and it's supported, I sticking with Win7.

As far as your question, I think I would make sure I have a couple of copies of your back up - Including the INSTALLATION PROGRAMS of everything you want to reload into Win8.

What else are we supposed to talk about if we don't talk about Windows 8 or Garmin software in this thread? So yeah, this discussion is in the right place.

I didn't say that it wasn't in the right place. I was just trying to explain why someone scanning this thread could lose sight of the fact that it started as a question about Garmin software and ended up being all about Windows 8. Granted, stan393 left the door open when he said "[I will upgrade] soon if i don't hear a lot of complaints about Windows 8".

My reply was directed towards the question "what does Win 8 have anything to do with Garmin GPS?" I should've quoted cameotabby instead.

I don't think anyone lose sight of the topic though. The replies are indeed spot on. No need to rush to Win8 especially if nothing needs to be fixed.

A different perspective

Hi all. I haven't been around in a while mostly because my good old Win XP finally threw it's last fit about a year ago and I went to Linux, had to send both my Garmins back for repairs, bought an ASUS Android tablet with gps that I LOVE, (mostly in that order!).. so I've got a different perspective:

My Android tablet does most everything I used to do on the PC and it's always with me. But, Android is really only currently optimized for stuff on a touch screen smaller than my 10 in tablet, so if I can try Win8 on it I'm going to jump on it.

The tablet & touch screen really is a different mindset and I know a lot of people don't think it would be their "go to" device (I was one of them but wanted the portability without the laptop weight), but I really fell in love with it and use it most of the time so Win8 has potential appeal for me if it's more geared to tablets than Android 4.0.3 is.

The same here. If you install ClassicShellSetup (google for it) it gives you desktop very similar to what used to be. For $40 I couldn't resist to try it. grin

Remember when PC Expo was the hot ticket in NYC

Was back in the early 1990's. There was the PC Show in Vegas and a secondary PC Computer show at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC. Occurred the third week in June. Was considered "for the trade only/had to know someone to get in." Took up the entire main floor, presentations on the upper floor, with an expansion area beneath the main. You'd be able to walk out of there with two promo bags of swag. Still wear some of those tee shirts when I hike. There are no more PC Computer Shows in NYC. Plenty of construction there though... confused

I've seen that link, but it doesn't tell squat! (i.e "At this stage Acronis cannot indicate if the software will ever be supported on Windows 8." I was hoping someone here knew from experience. I'll probably find out after I install Win8 this weekend. I'm doing a 'dual-boot' with Win7 so I'm not stuck with Win8.

You can create an image backup of your C drive, along with a recovery disk without outside software in Win7. See 'all programs', 'maintenance' folder in the start menu.

Yes, it does; but Windows 7 backup doesn't hold a candle to 'Acronis True Image'. Besides, once one upgrades to Win 8, the backup of Windows 7 won't do any good. So the question then will be "Does Win8 have a backup system that will surpass Acronis Backup"?

I still would like to hear from anyone who tried Acronis Backup Bootable Rescue DVDs, not the Acronis backup installed on Windows 8. Many times the Bootable Rescue DVDs will work when the 'System Installed' Acronis won't.

Got to "Start/Computer/System Properies" and included in the popup it will tell you if your screen is pen or touch enabled.

Go to this page and use the Windows 8 "Upgrade Assistant" to check compatibility with your current PC or laptop. After the scan completes click "See Compatibility Details". After that you can Close the window to stop the process.

I updated yesterday. It was slow. Maybe the servers were maxed out. Other than that everything went very well. Big shocks were new start screen and lack of start memu on desk top. Have since fixed both of those, and am now working in the equivalent of my previous Win7 environment. Why upgrade then, you ask?

Like I said, Windows 7 System backup doesn't hold a candle to Acronis. Acronis has a lot more options. Unless Windows 7 changed its backup from when it first came out, Windows 7 won't allow images of partitions ... only images of a drive. Check out Acronis and you'll find there are a lot more options Windows 7 is missing.

Classic Shell adds an XP-style start menu to Win7 & Win8

Classic Shell is a collection of features that were available in older versions of Windows but were later removed. It has a customizable Start menu and Start button for Windows 7 and Windows 8, it adds a toolbar for Windows Explorer and supports a variety of smaller features. Followup To Getting Ready For Windows 8

OK i downloaded Windows 8 Pro and formatted my C drive , got it installed. Saw pretty quick it did not want to accept the activation key code from the order where i downloaded. said it wasn't for a clean install...tried several times. sun nite i found a workaround. change a key in the registry and couple more steps ...it works. 8 can be customized to your liking fairly easy. only prob i haven't fixed yet is no driver/software for my HP Deskjet F4480 printer ...it isn't working yet...all in all i like 8 so far. i may have overlooked something but only way i got mapsource/basecamp back on here is run lifetime updater from my second hard drive and tell it to install to computer , it had to download 2013.20 again...tried eveything else including showing it where the map was on hd...if you know of a way that works let me know
