Do You Use You GPS Routinely In The Car Or Only When Needed?

As posted above, I am just curious if you use you vehicle GPS all the time when driving, whether you need it or not, if you don';t even turn it on when not needed, or do you put it elsewhere when not needed? My wife drives a Dodge Grand Caravan and she completely stored the Garmin Nuvi 500 most of the time and only powers it up when needed. I, on the other hand, leave it on the dash and I even use it to navigate to places that I know how to get to without it. I just like to see it displaying the map even when I don't need it.

I suspect that members here are more inclined to be like me just becasuse we have an interest in GPS, but I am sure that there aree some that put them in storage when not needed. Maybe some people don't even keep them in the vehilce.

Anyway, how about other here?

I use my GPS every time I'm in the car.

I like my GPS too, don't get

I like my GPS too, don't get me wrong, but it's on the big side to carry as a daily driver. I don't want to leave it in the car and invite someone to break in to grab it. Cell phone is usually sufficient to meet my needs for navigation.

Almost ...

Almost always with me, but not always on ... I am thinking about making a nice mount for it, though ... and that might change my mode.

In my car to check for speed cameras

With the proliferation of speed cameras in my area, I started to use my GPS every day.
Last week I got a speeding ticket for following the traffic flow. I guess everybody got a ticket like myself on that afternoon of rush hour.
The problem is that the speeding camera is not permanently located; but they keep moving it. Some streets/avenues have two speeding cameras on the same block and on the same side of the street, unbelievable...!! and you thought you already went thru one camera and then you get an incoming one.

only when needed

I only take it out when I'm going to some place I dont know.

GPS use? Everyday...

I use my GPS on the drive to work, the same drive I've made 5 days a week for years.
Why? I have gotten in the habit of watching my speed & I work in the afternoon, the gps tells me 'when' I'll arrive so I know how much time I have to goof off on the way in.

It's a bad habit smile

GPS Usage

I set it to wherever I'm going. Just used to having it on A suppose! LOL

use GPS all the time

I pretty much use the Gps all the time for the traffice routing. But lately with the newer maps from Garmin the travel times seem to be becomming more and more innacurate. An example. 2 days ago I had a 36 mile trip that for YEARS and YEARS has allways taken 1 hour and in the garmin it usually said anywhere from 55 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. With the last 3 map updates from Garmin, The EXACT same route says should only take 31 to 34 minutes. Now my iPad and iPhone using their routing and Traffic are saying the correct time of about an hour. Don't know whats going on with Garmin but I gonna start looking into a TOM TOM or a Magellin if the garmin travel time doesn't start getting a little more realistic

Constantly...

being used in my car, it's more interesting than the news!

Only When Needed

Most of my driving is local and at time I need it to find my route and destination. At times when I take long trips I will attach and use it. It may come in hand to re-route if there are traffic issues.

Most of the time

Its there most of the time but I only turn it on for longer trips IE over an hour.

To and from work

All the time especially in the morning to work. I like to see the time to get to work as I punch a time clock and do not want to be late getting there.

I carry mine mostly for the red light cameras, They are popping up all over town. I know where they are but it is just a reminder of them, I don't want to pay 158 bucks if I don't have to.

Always on. Not always using

Always on. Not always using the navigation. Having the map visable when you need to take a detour when you happen upon something is GREAT! Its had to remember all the street and routes.

Every time I remember

I use my GPS every time I remember to bring it, even on routine trips. I skipped one time recently and got stuck in roadwork I might have avouded if I had it and clicked Detour in time. I may be familiar with my usual route, but not the alternate routes.

Useful when needed

Always in the car .... only on when needed

I use all the time

My gps is mounted on the corner of the windshield. I routed the cable and is always on. I also use gps with red-lights and police enforcement points to keep me alert. What I do is lower the volume, and use it as a visual aid.

I use it to see the surrounding streets when traffic is bad and if I can find a smaller street to by pass traffic.

My wife says, why do you have the gps on, you know the way there, but when traffic is heavy she is the one to tell me to check if there are other ways out of the jam.

Just depends

Mostly it stays in the center console box.

At times I use it to verify my speed on longer local trips, although I know the route.

I do use it for local (30-40) miles going to a new place when I am sure of route but it may give me a better way of getting there.

I use mine all the time.

Even when traveling locally, I like to put in a route and use the turn prompts to coast instead of using the brakes. Saves gas and brake linings. Knowing the ETA is nice too. And then there are the trip logs to download and of course the POIs are handy. I also have several funny announcements that pop up when I pass Police Stations or Post Offices, etc. ( I guess I'm easily amused)

Yes, if you noticed differences please let us know. This area was updated in February of this year and is current with San Francisco's Municipal Transit Agency.

Most of the Time

I use mine most of the time even when not needed for routing. I find the traffic information to be marginally useful.

Always On

I have mine on all the time. At home, I just put it on View Map unless I actually need to find an address. Away from home, I always take it with me.

Mostly Out of Town Travel

I must say I'm mildly surprised with how many people use their units for traffic info. Personally, I find that to be of very limited usefulness. Generally, I have the ole NUVI in the car for routing when I go on out-of-town trips for routing. However, in addition to a few POI files from this site, I generally do load geocaching pocket queries on it also. That allows me to see a geocache a mile or so away en route which often influences my driving break decisions. If I decide to do a local geocaching run, I will sometimes throw the unit in the car for better routing and hands free operation than I can get from my handheld GPS.

GPS Use

Have always used it as soon as I start the car. It was a $700 unit when I bought it 5 yrs. ago and I guess I wanted to work it out!
