Nuvi 50 zoom level

Is there any way to change the default zoom level for low speeds? It's currently at 800ft but I'd prefer the additional detail of the 500ft view without having to tap the + button all the time. Tx

Good question

I'm watching for response.

.

No, there is not, at least not on US locale models. However, some higher-end models (like the 34xx & 37xx) *may* allow the user to disable Auto-zoom in the menu settings if the unit is set to a locale that normally allows the user to disable it.

For example, my 3790 if set to the US locale (which I am in) does not provide the means to disable Auto-zoom.

If I hard-reset the unit (which allows user to change the locale change at bootup) & set it's locale to the UK instead of the US, the option to disable Auto-zoom is now in the preferences menu and can be toggled on/off.

Basically, Auto-zoom prevents the unit from zooming in/out on it's own and fixes the zoom level to what the user has set it for. The zoom level will stay at this level until it's changed by the user.

There are quite a few of these locale-specific options on Garmin automotive units which begs the question to Garmin: Why allow it in one locale and not another?

Changing the unit's locale does NOT affect it's normal operation. It will operate just as it did before. What will change though will be language, displayed language text & units (imperial vs metric). These can easily be changed to your liking on the unit. One thing to keep in mind is that a hard-reset will wipe out your favorites so back them up beforehand. Unit specific settings will also need to be redone and recent finds will be wiped out as well...user beware.

Those of us who have been into Garmin automotive GPS for a very long time, have been scratching our heads at these locale-specific options/settings for years now.

Thanks

Thanks for the response. I suspected it wasn't possible, but didn't want to give up without asking smile

My experience with the auto zoom is that it can be trained. I own a 1250 & 3790 and my experience is with these particular models.

If zoom level is changed manually multiple times it sticks to that setting.

For example when traveling long distances I like to know names of cities around the freeway. To achieve that I manually change zoom to 1.5 or 2 miles. If I repeat the same operation a few times it stays at that zoom level as soon as I'm on a freeway and traveling 60/70 MPH. When back home I just lower the zoom to 800 ft or whatever is the highest to see all roads and it sticks there. Sometimes this has to be repeated 2 or 3 times, but I've never had problem getting it to the level I wanted it to be at. The only thing I couldn't get changed is the zoom when turning. It always goes to 120/200 ft although I tried to get it to stay higher. The same is when traveling on surface roads. If you want it at 500 ft, adjust it manually. If it goes back to default next time you use your GPS adjust it again and after 2 or 3 times it will stick at your desired level.

Hard reset will erase all of your work and it will go back to the factory default levels.

Interesting

Thanks, hercegovac. I'll give that a try! I never would have considered that!
