Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? - September 2012

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

DC

Did some traveling in and around DC this week. Avoided the worst of the traffic going there by arriving around 10:30PM, unfortunately cannot say the same about the return trip. Hit the peak traffic and decided to divert to dinner before heading home. Google nav app performed well.

Trip

Went to Palm Springs last weekend. The GPS took me a round about way through Hemet and San Jacinto, with lots of red lights along the way. Probably lost 20 minutes on that route.

On the way home, it wanted to go the same way. I changed from fastest route to shortest and it then kept me outside of those towns and on a nice, quick road. For some reason, it though the longer way (taken on my way to Palm Springs) was faster.

Goes to show that it isn't perfect, and some adjustment to your settings can help.

Not too far lately

Been driving within 60 miles or so of home, but I might make a BIG trip tomorrow over to Lubbock -- about 90 miles! Oh how the long-distance days have disappeared around here!

Nuvi vs Ford Edge

Last weekend we drove from Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) to Flin Flon (Manitoba, Canada) and returned a couple of days later. Good highways and kept our '11 Ford Edge at 113km. We have an Nuvi 1350, an Oregon 550 and Ford navigation, although other than having a nice map display, the Ford system is really frustrating and unless I am going a great distance I never use it.

I had recently updated my Oregon from v5.50 to v5.80 and found distance recording to be way off so I reverted to v5.50 and was interested in matching the Nuvi and Oregon. They both read the same after 780km!

On the return trip I decided to match the Nuvi and Ford. The maps always agreed, mind you in that part of the world, road choices are rather limited. Although both units said the same distance to go, they did not agree on the time. Part way home I kept note of the estimates.

at 5:00pm
Nuvi said time to destination 3+00 or 8:00pm
Ford said time to destination 3+55

at 6:00pm
Nuvi said time to destination 7:58pm
Ford said time to destination 8:18pm

at 7:00pm
Nuvi said time to destination +55
Ford said time to destination +66

By the time we turned off the main highway the Ford agreed with the Nuvi and we pulled into our driveway at 7:54 in spite of several miles of reduced speed due construction.

Nuvi wins!

Drove About 700 Miles This Weekend

From Chicagoland to McNaughton / Lake Tomahawk, Wisconsin. Didn't use the GPS really, but did use my eyes. There were a lot of bikes from the Annual Tomahawk Fall Ride, and a lot of State Troopers, including a few on bikes.

45 trips? I thought I was good with about 10-12. Been going since it opened in 1971. It has changed quite a bit! Loved the days when I could go in without getting my finger scanned! How the world has changed!

We left Michigan's Upper Peninsular, and are heading to Frankenmuth for Oktoberfest this weekend. Had a white knuckle drive over the Mackinac Bridge during the windy conditions. The bridge signs said the speed limit was 20 MPH for large vehicles, 30 MPH for everyone else.
