Should All previosly loaded POIs be left in folder?

New to Garmin , had a Tom Tom before.
Using a Garmin 2555lm using Poi loader.
Very happy with it so far.
My question is this :The folder where I have the Poi, BMP and MP3 files.
When adding a new POI and associated files should the previously installed POI files be in the folder?
Which would mean installing in manual mode for alerts etc for all previously installed POIs.
Or can I just use POI loader to install just the new POI
POI Loader defaults to the same folder all the time
Thanks

options

When loading POIs, unless you take steps to prevent it, all previously loaded POIs are erased from the Garmin GPS receiver.

So you have a choice of ways to go:

1) Load all of the POIs each time, your new POI and all of the old ones.

or

2) Load some POIs and rename the resulting file on the GPS so that it isn't overwritten when loading more POIs.

Option 2 is the way to go if you want to load POIs in "manual mode" and make changes to options (such as proximity alerts) for just some classes of POIs.

POIs are replaced with new ones

The way I understand the process is that POI Loader erases the contents and replaces them with the new POIs. Could'nt not have described it better than Frovingslosh did. That is exactly how I understand the process.

POI Loader lets you load files separately

At one time POILoader ALWAYS created a file called poi.gpi which meant that the previously loaded poi.gpi file was overwritten. A way around this was to go into the [device]:\Garmin\POI folder and rename the poi.gpi file to some other (more descriptive) name. Then, another batch of POI files could be loaded and the process repeated.

However, for some time now, POI Loader will ask the name one wants for the output .gpi file that it is about to create. POI Loader fills in a default name based on the name of the folder to which it has been pointed. One can accept that name or type in a new one.

So - it is now possible to load POI files one by one or in batches. It is the user's call.

There are other factors that one might consider. For example, how does one want the display to appear when doing a Where To? > [down arrow] > Extras > Custom POIs. The term All Categories will appear first and then will be the names of POI files. It is possible to use one level of sub-folders to create categories. Charlie has a good FAQ on this at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721.

It is also possible to use POI Loader to create .gpi files on your PC, giving each a specific name. After one has created, say, ten new .gpi files from .csv files, one can then move them en mass to the unit, putting them into the [device]:\Garmin\POI folder.
