Search this site and you'll see long threads about lifetime maps. The price you quote (and you can do better) is for a subscription for continual map updates (approximately every three months) for the life of the unit, or until you sell it.

In reality, even after you sell it the free lifetime maps are still available under Garmins new policy.
The Lifetime Maps stay with the unit and remain valid as long as you do one map update within a 24 month period.
