I have to keep an eye on Isaac this weekend. We have a small group heading for some mountain roads in eastern TN on motorcycles for the Labor Day weekend.

Where specifically? I doubt that we will get much of Issac by the weekend.

Possums

Anyone know how to keep possums out of the veggy garden? They are really taking a liking to things in there this year. Lost all my cucumber plants during spring (well before there was any cukes on them!), but they finally decided to leave them alone when the weather warmed up, not sure why. So I'm getting late cukes this year. Now they are ravaging the tomatoes. Grrrr.

Possums

You could trap and relocate them like spokybob does with his skunks idea

Dogs work very well - and they don't eat the veggies.

I have the problem with deer and rabbits

I read to plant foul smelling stuff and most did not work but the rosemary has kept the deer out, not the rabbits.

I have been able to keep all out but it is a bother. I go to Sams and buy the large jars of spices. Sprinkle the stuff, garlic, cinammon, spgitti seasoning, anything that smells and sprinkle it on everything. This keeps them out until the rain or water washes it off.

The possum has only been seen eating the cat food. Since the bobcat ate our cat the only problem we have with the possum is tearing up our lawn grass. He seems to stay out of the flower beds. May be the rosemary?

Another thing that seem to help a little was planting onions every 6" around the bed. We left them there till they died, three seasons. They put on a pretty flower pod the last year and made seeds before they died. It looked like an oriental plant, pretty...

We did buy the commercial stuff that smells to keep animals out of your beds but it didn't work.
The fox urine drew the foxes and we did enjoy feeding them weenies.

Maybe some of this will help.

I use moth balls when I want to get rid of wild aminals. Just buy from the grocery stores and spread around your yard, under sheds etc. Critters even snakes don't like the smell of moth balls.

Rough week

My favorite aunt (mom's sister) had a brain aneurysm on Thursday. Then while my mom and I stayed up all night hold my aunts hand in ICU, my mom, who had been battling lower right chest pain all evening) finally went down the ER. She's been admitted with a gallbladder infection and pancreatitis. We've been waiting for the pancreas to calm down to do surgery. Hoping it will be today. My cousins finally stopped world war 3 regarding heroic life saving efforts on my aunt. She didn't want to be a vegetable and finally everyone accepts that.

If you don't have an advance directive please get one.

Not having one tears families apart. She told all of us of her wishes, but in their grief many family members refused to accept. So PLEASE don't do that to yours. My mother has hers in writing and copies with several local hospitals and her clergy people. I don’t believe it will be needed with this surgery. Pretty routine except the pancreas acting up with it.

So if you’ve been wondering where I’ve been, now you know. May be away a bit longer as I care for my mom and assist my cousins through the days ahead.

Hope you all are healthy and well.

Please be nice to Jonathan!

~Angela

Thanks for sharing Angela

The advance directive is good advice. May God heal the sick and bring together the troubled.
