Street Atlas a no-go?

Have tried my best to figure this out but alas I guess I am missing something or it just can't be done.
I use the laptop version of Delorme Street Atlas and can't find any substantive information on how to get these POI files to work with SA. I have tried to download the .cvs files and use the GPS Babel prgm to convert to an .an1 draw file and while it says it was a success, nothing shows up in SA and yes I did add the file in the files section and it does show as being an active draw layer.
What am I missing?

Thanks to all, I was able to figure it out through the discussion.wink

SA

I do not think POI's work in either MS Streets&Trips or Delorme SA. POI's are for a GPS.

If

If you have S&T 2011 or 2013 you can export GPX files to your Garmin device. You can also import a GPX file to S&T 2011 and 2011 from either the Nuvi or a file folder on your computer or SD card.

Street Atlas is suppose to handle both GPX and CSV files, according to the help files, but I have long since given up attempting to use this program so can't be much help in answering the OP's question.

yes

poi factory csv or gpx files can be imported into either s & t or street atlas easily.

Agree

and then you can hide them or have them show on the map but it gets pretty cluddered/

Street Atlas USA

The newer versions of Street Atlas USA (2010 or newer) actually have direct support for POI Factory .CSV files. Click on the Draw tab > Files > Import. Change the file type to "POI Factory / Garmin CSV (.csv)".

It can also be done in the older versions, but takes a couple more steps to identify the field sequence in the .CSV file.

You can also specify .GPX as the Draw layer Import file type, and that should work too.

Importing CSV files

My Street Atlas 2011 [SA] will import .CSV files, but no more that 250 entries in any one file. More than that,it generates an error message & refuses to import the file. It WILL import .GPX files, no matter how many items are in it. I have both SA 2011 and S&T 2010. S&T has no limits on how many CSV items can be in an imported file, and will save any set of pushpins so created as a GPX file. I use S&T to create GPX files and feed them into SA.
ExtraPOIEditor mentioned many times around here will also convert CSV files to GPX and will get around this limitation of my version of SA without the need to use S&T.

Street Atlas

I use SA only because I don't need to look upon it & I can ask questions of it using a mic & headset. I use EPE to set up my files that I use to maintain. I download a any file in the CSV format unless it's a GPX file. Then I use EPE, http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor & convert it to a GPX file. That way I can download into SA, by going to the Draw tab selecting the icon associate with the file & importing it into SA. The reason I convert it to a GPX is there is no limit on how big the file is, like a CSV. Do not use GPSbabel to change the file to AN1 file because as you found out it doesn't work. If you need help on this let me know I will answer any questions you have.

SA 2010 Plus

I have Street Atlas USA 2010 Plus and it does not seem to have this limitation. I just imported a POI Factory .CSV file with over 1000 entries and it took the whole file with no problems. I used the import file type "POI Factory (Garmin CSV)". Maybe it is a difference between the Standard and Plus versions of SA?

Importing to MS S&T

I have to apologize, I had no idea that GPX files can be imported to MS S&T.

Just learned something new!

2011

This version will not let you do anything over 250 in CSV.

SA Address Book or Draw Layer

Are you trying to import into your address book (Find tab in Street Atlas USA) or POI's (Draw Layer tab in Street Atlas USA)? It is my understanding that the Address Book import has a limit of 250 entries, but the Draw Layer POI import does not.

I am guessing that the Plus versions have no limits on # items

imported in a CSV file. At least there is a workaround for the rest of us.

Street Atlas USA

Starting with the SA 2012 version it appears that DeLorme no longer sells a standard version. They only list the 2012 Plus version on their website.

other way

if you click on the xdata tab it will allow you to import the file, the result file I believe is a *.dds file.

XData is available only in Street Atlas USA Plus.

That's what the help file on my SA 2011 said.

Street Atlas & Street Atlas Plus address book & POI limits

Street Atlas 2010 limits:

"Find" tab->Address Book->Import: 200 record limit

"Draw" tab->Import (.CSV): 250 record limit
"Draw" tab->Import (.GPX): if there is a limit, I haven't found it. SA will import the Pilot/Flying J .gpx AND the WalMart/Sam's .gpx (eventually).

I don't believe Street Atlas Plus has any of these limits. Street Atlas 2013 Plus is due out Oct. 15, 2012. As others have noted, Delorme only sells the plus version now.

There aren't too many choices for WindowsOS Mapping & Nav software.

Street Atlas is the only one that has pretty decent trip planning AND pretty decent nav functionality. But as most everyone who has tried to use it has noted, its user interface is pretty non-standard and overly complicated, and in overall, I'd have to agree that SA's U/I stinks. Street Atlas has quite a few features that Streets & Trips lacks (including "VIA" points) but it's also missing a couple of features that Streets & Trips has (SA doesn't really have an easy way to select stop or via points on the map, so moving them by dragging isn't really possible. Doesn't really have a selection tool at all, at least not that shows you what - if anything - is selected.)

I'm also not sure if imported POIs can have custom icons in SA, like they can in S&T (but in S&T custom icons do not scale with the zoom level, which causes them to completely cover the map when zoomed way out, so then you have to turn them off & on a lot, and the pane where that is done cannot co-exist with the find nearby places pane!)

Streets & Trips wins hands down (among the offline Windows & iOS/Android apps) as far as trip planning, but its nav functionality is pretty rudimentary; it "says" too many stupid things that Microsoft should have fixed years ago (e.g.: "You-South" for every US highway), and sometimes it it really says waaaay too much about waypoints. But S&T's routing algorithms do work pretty well most of the time, especially if you tweak the "preferred road" settings, and make all route segments "preferred" (which unfortunately you have to do manually for every segment(s) since Microsoft has provided no way to make it default to "preferred").

Then there's ALK CoPilot, which has the most well-developed nav functionality by far, but they essentially eliminated the trip planning mode (which was more like S&T or SA) about three versions back, leaving only a PND-like nav program that runs only full-screen. And although CoPilot has some pretty impressive graphics, its routing stumbled too often in my "acid tests" (including giving instructions to enter/exit interstate highways at places where there are no exits. OOOPS!)

Where did you get that date

Where did you get that release date from? This year version was release in January of 2012. The previous versions was release in October but I don't think they are releasing until January.

From the product page: "expected to ship 10/15/12"
