How do I make a gpx formatted file work on my Garmin Nuvi?

You load it to your gps with

You load it to your gps with poiloader just like you would with a csv file. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for custom pois.

Use POI Loader

See:

Then if you still have questions, come back with your specifics.

It depends

on the content of the GPX file. If the file contains POI's then the links given by charlesd45 and CraigW will help. A GPX file can also contain routes, favorites and tracks. If you are trying to import that type of content, then we need more information about what model Garmin you have and the type of content in the GPX file.
