List your favorite/funniest Garmin mispronunciations

Jill pronounces Tallassee as Tallahassee.

My British lady refers to entrance ramps as "slip roads". The first time I had to refer to the display to understand what she meant.

This is pronounced pow way.

My Nuvi, when still a ways away from this road, pronounces it poe way road. When it reaches about 1/2 mile away, it corrects itself and gets it right. Bizarre.

So far, more than one person has mentioned varying pronunciations as the distance decreases.

I have a parkway near me in NY (Meadowbrook pkwy) and the street my house is on in FL are the same name. It never says the name the same way. Same exact spelling

"Galeener" when she says "Galena."

Several years back our Garmin pronounced "In-N-Out Burger" as "In North Out Burger." It took three of us several "listens" to determine what was being said. Unfortunately, we haven't had the Garmin within range of an In-N-Out Burger for quite a while, so I don't know if that has been corrected.

Reading, PA is pronounced by Garmin like reading a book instead of "Redding".

Pronounces Titusville in FL as Tit usville

Both the 1450 and 3597 pronounce Amsterdam Street as Amster Dam Street. It caught on. We're calling it that now.

There is a street named Jahnke (rhymes with yank) Rd and Jack calls it Junky Rd.

Touhy becomes a breathless: Two-ey!

Waynesville becoomes Way-nes-ville!

Skokie became something un-spellable!

I forgot what the 660 did to "El Camino Real", but I remember it was very different...

Our 65LM has Samanta for TTS instead of Jill. Samantha's vocabulary is much smaller than Jill's was.

Lincoln Highway now comes out as Lang CowLin.

Your nuvi 65 should be able to add all of these English language voices and some may offer a better vocabulary although I expect none will be as good as they are with your older nuvi 760. Give these a try with your 65:

In hindsight, I probably should have tried switching the language setting from English to French in the 3587 while we were traveling through Quebec. Samantha was pronouncing streets and locations that were not recognizable as French or English. It was a hoot trying to guess what she was saying.

Bollingbrook Drive is pronounced Bollingbrook Doctor on my Nuvi.

Roads named after Queen Victoria come out as "Victor-Rhea", and I'm using British English Emily.

No doubt ALL the British Commonwealth countries will have this problem, not just Canada.

Any Aussies or Kiwis here to confirm?

Are you using a British English voice? If so, that would be correct.

Pittsburgh International Arpt is pronounced using the abbreviated "Arpt". Very strange.

On the positive side, Garmin recently quit pronouncing "Penn" as Pennsylvania. William would be so proud.

I don't know if it still does but I remember visiting Michigan several years ago and it telling me to take I-75 south towards Toledo, pronounced toll-eh-duh.

After a dozen or more futile (non-emergency) attempts to tell my new 3597 that I wanted it to find a particular area hospital, completely astonished, I concluded "North Oaks" must be beyond its ability to recognize, so shortened the phrase to simply "Hospital", with the expectation of sorting through a potentially long list.

As annoyed as I had gotten by now, my frustration was broken when Samantha responded with yet another absurd variation on the standard question "Did you say Posh Bagel?"

If there's ever an emergency, I hope I'll remember to say "Medical Center", which apparently works quite well.

I use a Zumo 550, and the American English Jill voice.

I smile every time my friend and I go to the Warren Flea Market, and after we exit EB I-696 Jill directs us to "ebb 10 Mile". As opposed to the correct pronunciation of "eastbound 10 Mile".

Another Jillism is when driving on WB I-96, Jill says to exit at eyenk-ster Road, but when you get to the exit itself, she actually pronounces it correctly as Ink-ster Road.

There have been many others, but this is the first time I saw this topic.

Uhhhhh.... doesn't everyone pronounce the f's in 'buffet'? You mean it pronounces the t?

I live in Pickering, Ontario, which Samantha pronounces Pie-Kering; Galleria is pronounced Ga-leer-eeya, and Yonge Street in Toronto is Yawnge Street (should be "young").

When we traveled to Buffalo, NY, some time back, the 765 pronounced it Buffalowny.

My 765 pronounced Ajax (Ontario) as Eye-ax, but the new 2689 says Ajax correctly.

How disappointing!

Actually only a misprononciation here on Long Island, when all my gps models back to the C340 pronounced the Wantagh Parkway as "Wan tag" instead of "wan taw"

I live near the Lincoln Highway. Jill used to pronounce it correctly, but Samantha calls it "Ling Colin".

Not really impressed with Samantha, and Jill is no longer available on my 65LM. Oh well.

I like the Australian voice--he pronounces everything great!

It announces it as chip-it-ull.

I had one that pronounced the shortened drives (Dr.) as "doctor." As in, "Turn left at Elm Doctor."

My old Garmin used to say: "Arriving at Virginia Hospital"

Thankfully, the new one just says: Arriving at destination on the left"

I use the Aussie gal, all the street names are a blast, Spanish don't do good Aussie Style, lol

In my area is mispronounces a major street as Wall E rather than Whalley. Laugh every time I hear it.

Know someone who said their Garmin GPS turn by turn voice was practically unusable in Hawaii due to the mispronunciations street/road names.

Matianuck - The correct pronunciation is mat-ee-AN-uck. Jill says ma-TEE-a-nuck

being told "take exit fifty threebee."

Have been through a few of those where there is no pause between the number and letter and makes you wonder, "what did she just say?". LOL!
