Merging Garmin's Red Light & Speed Alerts with POI Factory's Red Light & Speed Alerts

OK, I've had my Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT for over 2 weeks now and I've driven around my neighborhood a few times now testing POI Factory's Red Light & Speed Alerts. I've noticed a few red light cameras had been physically removed yet POI Factory indicates they're still there. School zone speed alerts more often than not weren't flagged by POI Factory and where no school zones were present, POI Factory popped up a speed limit warning. Ugghhh! LOL! Bottom line: POI Factory's Red Light & Speed Alerts.csv is not entirely correct, far from it. I drive looking for physical signs warning me of red light and speed cameras.

Garmin sells it own Red Light & Speed Alerts file. If I buy it and merge it with POI Factory's own version, I should get as complete and accurate as possible red light and speed camera alerts, right?

.

Here in British Columbia, we have rotating RLC's. They may, or may not be active. I've suggested to Angela that they be kept active, instead of removed, as you never know when they rotate.

As for removals, someone has to report them. Are you volunteering? wink

School zones are not flagged, because they are not RLC's or Speed cams.

Bottom line, I don't think you can merge the Garmin, and alerts from here.

Multiple RLC & Speed POIs OK.

You can have as many RLC & Speed POI files as you want.

Merged Files Does Work

I've been using both Garmin and POI-Factory files with no ill effects. The warning chime on my nuvi2460LMT will sound for each version but most often not simultaneously.

As an aside the Red Light Camera laws are still being challenged in some areas of the USA and in a few cases successfully.

I still believe that if the yellow lights were given additional time before red appears the drivers would be more receptive to the law.

It seems that the goal is more geared to bringing in additional money and less on promoting safety.

Winnipeg

@withashout

This is the most recent published report I was able to find for Winnipeg. It's dated 3/31/2012:

http://www.winnipeg.ca/police/safestreets/12_1/offences.stm

I cross checked all of POI Factory's Winnipeg locations against it and did find 2 out-dated speed camera locations. The other 51 locations were all current and up-to-date.

As for school speed zones, POI Factory's camera files do not include them unless there's a permanently installed red light or speed camera at the site. We generally do not track temporary mobile sites.

I changed the status for the two speed cameras, and they will be dropped from the files published later today.

If you know of any other discrepancies, send me a note via the contact form and I'll make sure they're corrected.

Thanks for sharing your feedback.
