Another FAQ? - How to report Map Errors

That's odd. Yesterday I submitted a FAQ on how to report map errors. Today, a FAQ showed up on the Recent Posts by someone else from 5 years ago.

Wonder what happened?

maybe just maybe

Mr. King it could be you only been a member for 11 weeks and someone wrote that FAQ 5 years ago, POI Factory has been around a long time, I'm just a newcomer with a little over 4 years.

How elitist! Just because I've only been a member for 11 weeks instead of forever? That means I am stupid? You would rather have a FAQ that is less informative?

Perhaps...

This may or may not be what happened, but it may be that JM or Angela looked at your FAQ and wondered if there was already one in the FAQ section. My guess would be that they looked and found the one by charlesd45 - which made it show up un Recent Posts.

I suspect that you looked at an hour or so ago. If my guess is right, since I just looked at it, the time on recent posts for the next person to look at it ought to be the time they look less 4:58 PM July 17, 2012

??

Getting Offended Does No Good

I see no reason to get all offended at what Flaco said. He's simply stating the obvious: that you duplicated an existing FAQ and thus your version was rejected. If you had additional information that would have been useful, you should have contacted Charles through his contact page and sent him the information so he could update his FAQ or else made a post regarding the added information.

Easy Does It

Take it easy people......this site is a valuable asset and a source for information. Better than you can get elsewhere, especially from the manufacturers of the products we are using. And the information is provided free of charge. The organizers are doing a great service for the benefit of us all.

OK

He implied that, because I was relatively new, I had nothing valuable to say. It was offensive.

This was not obvious, or even true.
I had more information.

Thank you. This is reasonable.

Have you tried to find a FAQ here? I put 'map errors' in the search pattern and got 131 pages of threads. How am I supposed to know that there was a FAQ for this? Even choosing FAQ on the top right menu does not seem to filter the searches.

I'm calm now. I had to walk away for awhile.

Suggestion

Since all FAQS must be approved from the owners or moderators of this site, I strongly suggest you send them an email via their contact form asking them why it wasn't accepted. I don't think creating a forum topic based on a decision they made is the best route to follow.

If it can reassure you I've also had FAQS refused in the past but I've also sent them private emails concerning other issues.

Cheers smile

@David: The list of FAQs is

@David: The list of FAQs is short. When you click on the FAQ link in the upper right corner of the screen, on the page that appears is an option to view an alphabetical list of all FAQs. Click that link and you can see the entire list of FAQs.

The search engine on POI Factory is not the greatest. I tend to use Google to search, limiting the search by adding "site:poi-factory.com" to the end of my search inquiry.

One last thing: a new FAQ dealing with the same topic as an existing FAQ, regardless of how much new information is included, is still a duplication of a FAQ. Thus why your entry was likely rejected. But the people to ask are JM or GlobeTurtle. Venting here doesn't do much except make you feel better. smile

I did not see the option of listing all FAQs alphabetical until you pointed it out. Thanks.

Does this search point to the actual posts with the searchwords? This would be great!

And it did! Thanks for the therapy. Send me your bill. smile

Thanks for the search tip

"site:poi-factory.com"
I have often searched to become discouraged because the search had so many post and most not connected to what I was searching here on the factory.
I have searched on Google and received information, some with the factory as the source after I was unable to find it on the factory.

Thanks for this tip.

Google Search

I've been playing with Google Search. I tried to pull up FAQs with map errors for this site. Even if I use a concise search:

+"FAQ" +"map errors" site:poi-factory.com

...it still has over 600 entries.

Then, I found out that it shows threads that do not contain the strings. For example, it pulled up this:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/36629

It does not contain "map errors, but look at the right most box of Active Forum Topics. It has the string.

Narrow Your Google Search

Try "FAQ" "Garmin map errors" site:poi-factory.com

Adding Garmin to the search yields 6 results. There are several map vendors - Garmin, TomTom, Magellan...

FYI, the + operator is no longer supported . Use quotation marks instead of + to require a search term. See this Lifehacker post and the Google Removes The + Search Command article for details.
