In my garmin acct I have a map upgrade that I haven't downloaded.
I think they usually release new ones in August, about a month away.
Should I wait for that, or will it be taken away, or what? I have been having some weirdness and I was going to plug the unit in and let it update it's software if it wants too.
But there is that upgrade, waiting.
What should I do?
Free updates are available for only a short time. When was the unit activated?
The update was provided because the unit was replaced, they couldn't get the traffic to work. It still only works part of the time. It's that cellular modem model with the google search in it.
I have to reboot it every week or so to get that to connect again. It's really buggy.
If the map update is provided under Garmin's nuMaps Guaranty, then it is only available for 90 days after your device first obtained a satellite lock.
Under normal circumstances the next update will be available in early August.
I would get it before the 90 day time frame because it is free until the deadline.
It's long past 90 days, and it's still there, expires Sept 2012.
So maybe August might be a good time, might be new then.
How often do the Garmin map updates come out. I keep getting a message on mine that my map is out of date but I have to purchase it now. Should I wait till after August?
Map updates typically occur 4 times a year. We are due for another sometime in August so at this point I'd wait for the next one if I had to purchase it.
IF the unit was new then you would beable to download every new map update available within 90 days... Read the following from Garmin.
" Guarantee applies to one covered Garmin product. Not transferable to any other person or product. You will qualify for the free map update(s) only if you connect your device to your computer and then visit www.garmin.com/mapupdates either (i) prior to first using your device, or (ii) within 90 days of first acquiring satellites while driving with your device (the "First Satellite Fix"). If you qualify under one of these two conditions, then you will be entitled to receive one or more free map update(s) during the 90-day period following the date you connected your device to your computer and visited www.garmin.com/mapupdates or the First Satellite Fix date, whichever is earlier, if and when map updates are available for purchase on Garmin’s website during such period.
SINCE your unit is older than 90 days and Garmin gave you a free map update for all the problems your having then I would say that you have 1 free map update and that it expires in September of 2012.
That being said if we look at the history of past updates the next one should be out in August so personally I would hold off.
Just wondering: if you buy a unit with the "LM" for lifetime maps, and you do not visit mapupdates within 90 days of first using the device, do you lose your LM privileges?
The 90 days is for when you 1st purchase a unit. It is actually 90 days from a satellight locking on to the unit. If you don't turn it on for 3 months and then turn it on to get satellights then your 90 days starts.
The LM (lifetime) would be good anytime. The lifetime maps come out 4 times a year. They are due again about August. I look at it as the lifetime map does no good for the first time around because you get a free map within 90 days. And if you want, you don't have to up date your map at all when you have LM. It's your choice, but counter intuitive to the reason for having them.
Thanks for answering that, pwohlrab.
Just fyi, there was a thread a year or so ago, dealing with Garmin's wording of the one free map update. The box printing was not so specific, and some were lulled into believing they had more time than Garmin was actually giving.
I did the map update from my account, it took three hours. 2.1 GB file.
Geez. Interesting that this process didn't seem to delete anything in the unit. I backed it up but there was no need to restore. I thought that factory defaulted Garmins.
Course, it's a 1690, kind of non-standard.
Basically all a map update does is overwrite the old map file(s) with new ones. None of your settings would get changed under normal circumstance.
