Clearing all trip data on a NUVI 40

Anyone know how to clear all trip info on a NUVI 40? I mean the bright blue lines that show where I've been?

Not in the Owners Manual.

Not sure

It may be that this feature was eliminated on the new nuvi Essential Series devices like yours but on the older units, we could tap Tools, My Data, Clear Trip Log.

If, on the other hand, you just don't want to see the log data displayed, page 20 of the manual describes hiding Trip Logs on the Settings, Map, Trip Log page of your nuvi's display.

Reset

Just wanted to reset it. I like it, but tired of all the overlapping lines at home and work.

Believe you are right, the newer units don't do that.

Thanks anyway.

same as 260 and 2460?

Hold down finger over left bottom corner until screen changes?

Page 14 nuvi 40 user manual
Resetting Trip Information
1. From the map, select the Speed field Reset

2. Select an option:
. Select Reset Trip Data to reset information on the trip computer.
. Select Reset Max. Speed to reset the maximum speed.

3. Select OK.

Nope. That only clears some of the data, such as greatest speed, miles traveled, etc since last reset. Not the tracks.

you r right

Found this on a page with the 40 specs:

Trip Log
The trip log allows you to display where you’ve been (which can be a big help navigating mega-mall parking lots, and even in everyday city driving). The trip log is the thin blue line shown below.

There are options to Show or Hide this info, but unfortunately (unlike on other nuvis) there appears to be no way to clear the trip log short of a hard reset! Perhaps this is just an oversight that will be fixed in an upcoming firmware update; I’m certainly hoping Garmin hasn’t decided that privacy features should be limited to higher priced models!

Is Trip Log visible by default on your nuvi model or did you activate it? On the older nuvis, the display of the Trip Log is hidden by default.

For ordinary use, I'd find the Trip Log blue lines to be non-informative and undesirable, so I'd have them hidden from the get-go. Is there a reason you want to see the log on the nuvi? On rare occasions when I do want to see where I've been, I still keep the Trip Log hidden on the nuvi, but import the Tracks to Mapsource (which I assume also is possible with BaseCamp).

The Blue Line

Not being able to clear the line makes this feature worthless.

I guess I could hide them when I get tired of them, then show them when I need to.

I wonder if editing my current.gpx would work?

I like the blue line

just in case that I have to back-track.

Editing current.gpx will not help you. It is an output only file created new at every boot-up of the nuvi. The nuvi stores the source data in protected memory that is not user accessible. The nuvi does not read current.gpx. Its purpose is to transfer data from the nuvi to other software such as BaseCamp, WebUpdater, myDashboard, etc.

I & O

alandb wrote:

Don't think that is entirely true. If you do a master reset, it erases your favorites and trip log. If you put a backed-up copy of current.gpx in the gpx folder, it brings back your favorites and trip log.

This tells me that, on boot-up, this file is read and used to recreate the imbedded data.

Renamed.

Unless the 40 is different from other models, putting current.gpx back in in the nuvi as current.gpx will not reimport your favorites. You have to rename the file to something other than current.gpx ... otherwise the nuvi will overwrite it when it boots.

I admittedly don't have a model 40 to test with, but have verified this behavior with several other nuvi models.

Edit: Just as a point of information, nuvi's do not import tracks. That is why you get the favorites, but not the tracks when you import the renamed current.gpx after a reset.

True, but the renamed file is being read. I guess I should have said to edit current1.gpx, delete current.gpx, then reboot.

When you bring up current.gpx in POIEdit, there are thousands of lines with only a Long & Lat, but no description. What are these?

Track log.

Those are the points in the track log (or trip log). Most Garmins will record 10000 points before they start overwriting the track. If you transfer current.gpx to another program such as BaseCamp, you will see the track displayed on the map.

Edit: By the way, editing the track points out of your renamed current.gpx, then reimporting it will not help you delete the track unless you have also done a system reset. The track is still stored in the protected memory and will be rewritten to current.gpx on bootup.

So a way to clear the tracks is to do a master reset and import a renamed current? Why didn't anyone say this when I first asked? surprised

Reset

I believe flaco did say that, but maybe you missed it. Note that it is the reset, not the import that clears the log.

Sometimes I have to be told several time before I see the light. But the members here work very hard to get to the best outcome.

Most

Most newer Nuvi's have the capability to clear the Trip Log through the menu system. I'm surprised that these low end models don't have this feature.

Anyhow, for most of use with newer Nuvi's, you clear the log using Tools - Settings - Navigation - Automobile - Trip Log - Clear Trip Log - Yes. While your there, if you don't want to see the blue line anymore just tap Show on Map - Disabled - Save.

WARNING

I believe the reset on page 22 will wipe everyting including Favorites.

The Nuvi 40 is still missing the ability to wipe just the track. I guess you will have to sell it or give it away as a present and get a higher end model that has erasable track only.

That surprises me too Rick. I wonder if it is hidden in there somewhere? Maybe a diagnostic menu?

I do not know what you paid for the Nuvi 40 but I bought the top of the line 3790LMT with pretty much every feature available including voice command, bluetooth, lifetime maps, lifetime traffic and powered mount with larger speaker at Walmart recently for $159.

I agree put the 40 on eBay.

After I bought the new 3790LMT I put up my old 295w on eBay and sold it for what I paid for it nearly 2 years ago so the new 3790LMT cost little more than what I got for the old one that didn't have lifetime maps or traffic. It was a win win!

Just be kind to the eBay Buyer and unregister the device at myGarmin so that the Buyer can register it in their name.

I have an 3790LMT

and updated to a 3590LMT because of the 5" screen. Will get it next week.

2455 Is the same

2455 Is the same, can't reset the track either, you can only do it by resetting the whole unit, by turning it completely off and holding the bottom right corner as it starts up. Then you loose all your settings but the custom poi stay loaded.

So long to MapSource

With Nuvi 2455 and I suspect the same with all the 2012 models, I can no longer send or receive from mapsource, the nuvi is just not there, neither is the nuvi or the card in the "safely remove Hardware and eject media" menu/list, there is no way to eject through windows explorer either, so that must mean that they are hot disconnect or hot swap. Very interesting.

More to the story

I have reloaded the software v 6.60 using WebUpdater and now I can delete the tracks by going to --- settings --- device --- clear travel history. I has worked for my nuvi 2455.

The other thing which was a bit of a problem is the lack of voices so I copied some from the files in 3760, but when I went into webupdater there were heaps there for download,

Can't clear trip log on 2012 units

Walmart has nuvi50 for $69 on black Friday. I called Garmin to ask about trip log clear. No can do. Hard reset the only way. I asked about a firm-ware update. He said he is not heard of any plans for that. I told him it was a deal-breaker for me. He said he would pass that info along.
