Their acceptance page says, partially, ...
"The software is provided on an "as is" basis without warranty of any kind — either expressed or implied — including, without limitation, any implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Garmin does not warrant the performance of the software or that the software will meet your requirements or operate error free.
For some unit updates, this software will clear user memory, including 'Recent Finds' and 'Favorites.' Please back up important data such as routes, tracks, and waypoints to MapSource prior to updating."
Nice to know they support their own work.
Change history
Changes made from version 2.5.5 to 2.5.6:
Changed the reboot behavior of some MTP devices.
Fixed issue with communicating with Garmin servers.
Fixed issue with accessing the Temp directory.
How Does It Work?
Is is working well???
I'm running 2.5.5 Updater & 2.5.4 POI loader.

Why or how would Webupdater affect your favorites or recently found?
Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.

That's all boilerplate CYA
That's all boilerplate CYA legalese, including the part about Webupdater potentially deleting information. However, in your defense telling people to back up the stuff in question is a wise idea. It certainly can't hurt.

The whole warning was given by Garmin. The second paragraph just didn't get italicized, due to my incompetency.

I did before I asked the question since the last part of that post reads:

That's referring to the actual UNIT UPDATES (firmware updates) you can get by connecting your Nuvi to the computer and running Webupdater, and not simply installing a new version of Webupdater.

Still not sure why we need a web update that checks frequently for map updates when Garmin only produces four updates a year.

WebUpdater doesn't check for map updates, it checks for updates to the firmware and supporting files of the individual GPS units. I have 3 different Garmin GPSs, all of which have had FW updates at different times.
WebUpdater is one of the programs that works pretty well keeping any model GPS updated.
The new map updates are done by Garmin Lifetime Updater or, as many here refer to it, Option 2, MapUpdater. MapUpdater also works well, it is the Lifetime Updater that has had some problems since introduced.
