760 and Space

I have a 760 along with Lifetime Maps. I was trying to update to the latest map and ran into a problem. It says that there isn't enough space on my unit for the North America or the US and Canada, I believe it was. However, there was enough room for the Lower 49 states, so that is what I downloaded.

Are the new maps the large of a file or is there something I can do to get the US and Canada version? I know I won't be going to Canada (a beautiful country, by the way), Alaska, or Hawaii anytime soon, but was curious. Thanks in advance

Delete some files..

Have you deleted the voices, help files and vehicles that you don't need? Then transfer the JCV file to your computer along with any supp map you have on your unit ant the whole NA map will fit.. Then add the files back onto the unit largest ones first, JCV and POI files.. Or, transfer the POI and JCV to an SD card.. KIRK

Some solutions

I suggest you make a full backup of your 760 onto a computer hard drive before starting.

Then, on the nuvi 7x0 series like my 750 and your 760, with your 760 connected to your computer, use your computer to find and delete the unneeded voices, help and text file that you'll never use. Ditto for any big images, mp3 files or audio books you may have installed in the past. I deleted all voices except the six English language voices. You can do the same unless you really find a need for Finnish, Africaans, etc! With the unneeded files removed (especially the large voice files), you can install all of North America and have a bit of free space left over on your nuvi with the latest City Navigator NA NT map update.

Now with the extra space, go to myGarmin, then myMaps and redownload and reinstall the 2013.10 map update. You should find that all of North America can still fit on your 760 with the 2013.10 map.

When doing the re-downloading and re-installation of the map, let me also suggest that you click the Options button and change the default "Install to GPS only" to "Install to computer and GPS." With 2013.10 on your computer, you will have added options in the future to install the portions of the map that didn't fit inside your nuvi to a SD card inserted in the nuvi, thereby still giving you all of North America.

A search of the Garmin forum topics here at The Factory can offer more detail on all the above.

Good luck and report back with your results. But for now, you still have the ability to install all of North America to your nuvi 760.

[Edit] Well done, you beat me to it, finbar! Note, though, that the nuvi 7x0 series does not have or use JCV files. (And welcome to The Factory if no one's greeted you yet.)

Backup

backup, BACKUP BACKUP before deleting anything

Just checked my 750

I've installed the latest map update and my 750 is now reporting 104 Mb free. My unit reports my map as "CN North America NT 2013.10" and it includes Canada. I've already deleted unused files like voice and vehicle icon files so I guess my next map update will have to go on my SD card.

I wonder where they are building all the new roads?

Not necessarily an increase in roads

that is causing the larger map files. Garmin/Navteq have made large increases in speed limit data and lane assists over the past several map releases. I am not sure if they have increased POI coverage, but that would be another source for larger files. And it wasn't that long ago that they added the partial detail for Mexico to the CN NA maps.

They've also added Mile Marker locations on many if not all Interstate Highways and maybe other highways in 2013.10. This would also increase map file sizes. Since the MM locations are only seen with Mapsource or BaseCamp on a computer and can't be seen on nuvi displays and seem not to be useable on a nuvi, maybe they're setting up a future feature on many nuvi models that will appear in future map updates.

Thanks

Thank all of you for the tips. I will try that when I get home from work this evening.
