lost the poi's by category function on my on Nuvi 2495LMT

For some time, I have used folders to categorize my custom poi's on my pc and the categories would appear on my Nuvi units. Now my 2495LMT just shows all the individual poi's alphabetically within category. I have not made any changes to the category structure on my pc and run poiloader as I have in the past. I don't know if things got broken when I installed the newest version of poiloader or with the newest version of the unit operating software. Anybody else experiencing this loss of functionality?

sox.exe 14.0.1 is the right version to use with POI Loader, so the next most likely issue is its location.

sox.exe needs to be in the directory containing POI Loader.exe and not in the directory with your csv, gpx, wav and bmp POI files. Where did you put sox.exe on your computer?

In case it's needed for a future reply, did you have wav audio alerts with your Custom POIs in the past and they're now gone? ...or have you never gotten the audio to work with your POI loading?

check your folders

Check the folders on your computer. POI Loader (2.7.1) may be in the Program Files (x86) folder. That's where you need the 14.0.1 version of SOX.

It's in the same folder as the POI Loader, which is where it has been for the past few years. Nothing in my file system has changed. The only thing different is a new Nuvi with the 6.40 firmware.

My old 2595 worked perfectly with the same setup, except for the fact that I had NOT updated the firmware and was still running 6.20. I wasn't even aware of these problems with 6.30. When I got the replacement Nuvi, I was stuck with 6.30, and updated to 6.40.

I found...

...A POI Loader folder right where you said. I downloaded it to my main folder, but I guess it installed there. Thanks.

I have read here and there about seperate folders for wav files? Is this something new? I have always had my csv, bmp, and wav files together with the exact same name.

That is how they should be.

Are you getting other sounds? Just want to make sure volume is up and sound not muted.

Sounds work

but when I am loading POI's at the end it shows me a list of wav files that it says are not in the right format. Again, these are files I have been using for years on my 765, and for the past 6 months on my old 2595.

That is how it should be how I have it, all together, or should my wavs be in a different folder now?

OK, now that I have added sox to the C:Program Files/Garmin/POI Loader folder, I don't get the error about the wav files anymore. It's funny though, I get a popup asking me to run sox while the POI Loader is transferring the files. Whatever works.

Different versions of POI Loader

Different versions of POI Loader could be in different locations in the directory structure of the PC.
Sox.exe has to be in the one that is being run. Have you updated POI Loader recently? The updated version might not have sox.exe in that folder. Search for POI Loader in different locations.

dobs108 smile

What version of poi loader?

A few versions ago there was a change where it installed. You could have multiple versions and just picking the wrong one.

Run sox.exe ?

[quote=Greg2561 I get a popup asking me to run sox while the POI Loader is transferring the files.

This is a browser security warning. It should give you the option of always running it. Chose that option and you should not get the warning in the future.

Working now...

Everything is working as should be now except for...

Still can't get my poi's into categories anymore, and

I know there isn't a fix for it yet, but I really wish I could edit the tts voice to get rid of the recalculating phrase.

Thanks for the help guys!

i upgraded from 3790lmt to

i upgraded from 3790lmt to 3490lmt. poi categories is no longer there. i used both an old and new version of poi loader. i think problem is in 6.30 version.

i learned from problems with 3790lmt, email to Garmin with problem is not monitored by a human. it spots key words and sends a response. i told them by email the traffic power cord was missing from the exchange unit and got a note on how to clear traffic providers

Re: lost the poi's by category function ....

This scares the crap out of me!

Garmin's inclined to not give a hoot if we like it or not (based on previous experience). I hope that this whole thing encourages them to adjust this MO.

One question I've got is this, if you have a set of files in folders that are run through POI loader, do they also become single level? (i.e. lose categorization?)

Thanks!

Yes, if all the folders are on the same level.

Use TTS editor to substitute blanks for the phrase.

And the first thing they always tell you is to do a hard reset. I've had 3-4 problems sent to them by email and they have failed every time.

There phone help is reportedly much better.

No TTS update

Unless they have just come out with an update, there is no version of the TTS editor that will read the new encryption on the voice files.

Sort of categorized....

I had my sub-categories setup as (1-Fast Food, 2-Restaurants, 3-Hotels, etc.). When I pull up my POI's in my nuvi now, they are listed like this:

Arbys
Burger King
McDonalds
Subway
Applebees
Longhorn Steakhouse
Red Lobster
Best Western
Comfort Inn
Holiday Inn
La Qunita Inn
Quality Inn

I have 17 sub-categories, and at least 10-15 POI's in each sub-category. So my list is pretty long. But at least if I know I am looking for Amtrak Stations in my sub-category 14-Transportation, I know that I can hold the down button for a while to get into that area. It still sucks though.

Hope this helps mtiernan.

I contacted Garmin about the loss of my POI categories. After a rather lengthy email conversation with Garmin telling me what I was doing wrong (not!), they finally sent this email.

Dear Greg,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I have spoken to my help desk and this issue has been reported. The issue should be fixed on our next software update. I apologize and we appreciate you patience.

For Sure

I'll believe it when I see it! They were aware of it before the last update.

WooHoo - Categories Are Fixed In 7.00 for 24x5/25x5 series!

Just updated my 2595 to V7.00 and am very happy to report that categories and subcategories are now working with the new firmware!

2495lmt ok too!

Update fixed the problem.

Suprising....

I was pleasantly suprised that they got the update out that fast. I was figuring it would be a few months and a couple more updates at least. Thank you for listening Garmin!

One of the original posters

One of the original posters questions was whether or not there was a way to use "voice command" to search for custom POI's.

I just received my 3590LMT and I added two POI files, Campgrounds And Dunkin Donuts but I can't find a way to voice navigate to those categories.

Is it possible or not?

Thanks

Here's Voice Recognition for Custom POIs for the nuvi 855

I'm not sure about your 3590, but for the older 855, I can Voice Command to Custom POIs via:

Voice command: Where To
Voice command: Extras

then I'm asked to Voice Command a line number to choose the Custom POI I wish to Go to.

It can completely be done on the 855 through voice commands.

Thanks but no "extras" on the 3590

Thanks, yes, I have an 880 and can do the same. Do not have the extras app with the 3590

Based on your Owners Manual:

http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/nuvi_3500_OM_EN.pdf

page 73 suggests saying:

Where To
Custom POIs

and going from there which might meet your needs.

No "Where To" voice command

Thanks. I can get to my custom POI's as the manual suggests via touch input but it seems the 3590's voice options are very limited. The available commands work much better than with my 880 but there are only like a dozen commands, and "Where To" is not one of them.
