Lightsquared declares bankruptcy

Not sure if that ends the Lightsquared threat to the GPS frequencies or the move's consequence will be to force regulatory/political hands.

Opinions?

Lightsquared still in the news

I wonder

No Government Money Involved

As I recall, no government money was involved, but there are private loans outstanding that are in the billions.

old case

This topic was discussed some time ago, when Lightsquared was trying to get "too big to fall" status and money from government. It's good they didn't get it, and finally this whole think will end. Of course some get burned as usual and some make on it handsome profit. There is not much to discuss, as everything was said long time ago. This bankruptcy was only matter of time, and finally happened.

I guess

I guess Lightsquared didn't wine and dine (and line the pockets) of the right people down in DC.

Good. That's as it should be, imo.

As much as the U.S. needs to elevate internet access to close to other countries standards, I'm old-school and believe we should do it lean, mean, comprehensive, .. and affordable.

Which typically means well regulated, not privatised and run on corporate handouts.

And I'm actually a Libertarian! History shows that no regulation at all tends to lead to results contrary to the general public good.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

don't start the party yet

This quote from the article makes it sound like they're still planning on spending good money after bad:

Quote:

Bankruptcy “is intended to give LightSquared sufficient breathing room to continue working through the regulatory process that will allow us to build our 4G wireless network,” Chief Financial Officer Marc Montagner said in a statement.

In my opinion, the whole thing was a pipe dream

If everyone in the proper government agencies does what's written into their department's charters, this whole thing should go away. The concept was screwed from birth and should never have gotten as far as it did. Throw all the private money you want at this problem...just don't ask for any of mine. I didn't ask for this thing, nor should I have to support it.
