Transfering Favorites

While researching new GPS units, there was a GPS review that indicated how easy it was to transfer GPS favorites from one GPS unit to another. Does anyone know how it's done?

Depends on the GPS

For the Garmin Nuvi series, you take the old current.gpx file and rename it to something like temp.gpx and transfer it to the new GPS in the same location as the current.gpx file. Upon booting the new unit, it will add the temp.gpx info to the current.gpx file.

I know how to create a file

I know how to create a file on my PC, but how do I create a file from my old GPS.

It is simple to do with Mapsource or BaseCamp

It is simple to do with Mapsource or BaseCamp. Just hook up the old Garmin and download the favorites and then hook up the new one and send them to it. It even preserves the different groups if you have assigned them to your favorites. Just did it with my new 3790 and it was just a matter of grabbing the favorites from the old unit that I had downloaded and dragging and dropping them to the new one using BaseCamp. The whole process took about 2-3 minutes.

When you are doing the map updates there is a point where you can select the option to install to the GPS or both GPS and computer and BaseCamp and the latest maps will be installed in the computer if you pick that option. You also can go back and run the map install again and just choose install to computer only. I use that to also get the latest maps installed in my laptop.
